Hi experts ,

I downloaded sacd files from internet (marantz audiphile grade sacd for testing). I can play it in my laptop using vlc player.

I have Panasonic 3D blue ray player BDP220. I tried to connect my hardisk to blue ray player and play this file but in vain .

Is it possible to play it using my blue ray player?

Thanks
Renjith

I think we have to see the type of file i.e mkv or wav etc, and if the Bluray player supports that or not.

Or there might be an option to convert the file format and then use it in the bluray player.

Thanks for the reply. My blue ray player plays flac and mkv.
I dont remember the extension of the sacd file. So we need to do convert this file to some readable format?
The sacd file I am talking is an audio file from Marantz.

The type of the file is not supported by my blue ray player.
I am just trying to find any way to play the downloaded SACD file.

I think you can only play a SACD file in a PC with appropriate software player or in a DVD/Blu-ray player only if the concerned player supports like the Oppo DVD players.

Some good media player like foobar or other might have the option of conversion from one format to another format.

I think this should be tried once and it might work. you may try converting to flac or wav.

Its more than the ability of a DVD player to FLAC or wav. Since SACDs are sampled at a few Mhz. Playback of such files require highly specific players which have the appropriate DACs to convert this digital media into an analog signal.

Most common bluray players do not support direct SACD playback.
Even if you are using your PC, your PC would not play SACD directly, instead it would convert it to PCM (174kHz) and then give you an analog out. Foobar does that.

Hope this helps !

I have a Pioneer BDP150 that plays SACD.
I have tried writing a SACD iso to a blank DVD and even this the player was able to play (both SACD and CD layer).

Are you sure that its the CD layer thats playing not the SACD. I have TDSOM SACD which can be played on all payers !

SACD disks normally have a CD layer and an SACD layer. A normal player should play the CD layer on the SACD, but it will be standard 2 channel.

If you want multichannel SACD to be decoded, you need an SACD compatible player. Typically Sony BD players (not necessarily all) are SACD compatible; the Oppo is as well.

The SACD stream can be output either as DSD (a proprietary code) which means your 5ch AVR must have the ability to decode DSD (rare). Therefore most SACD players can also decode DSD to LPCM internally and output as PCM in 5 channels, which any reasonable 5ch AVR with digital inputs can handle.

Trust that helps.

Basically since my blue ray player is not supporting SCAD I cannot play it using it. Need to get an Oppo or any other to play it.
Thanks Shankar.

I can even choose which layer to play. It plays SACDs very well including iso images written on DVDs

Hi Shivam, can you share how you accomplished this? first how did you manage to write the CD and SACD layers on DVD-R? which media did you use? second, how to you choose between CD and SACD layers? very interesting....

Thanks for your response

I simply tried burning an iso image on a DVD and then tried playing it in my BluRay-SACD player. It just works for me.

I used CDBurnerXP program on Windows 7 for writing a Moser Baer single layer DVD on a dual layer compatible USB DVD writer.

guessing the switching is between 2 ch & multi-ch and not CD and SACD layers - anyways i'm sure you are enjoying the SQ.

Thx

I'll check and get back. Switching is possible and the display says SACD or CD layer. I have to check if the SACD layer is multi channel or stereo.

For me the difference in SACD's layers is not much even on the original SACDs. In my opinion SACDs have better recording, mastering and transfer qualities and so the sound quality is good.

I am also doubtful that you can burn an SACD ISO image file onto a DVD media and can play it back like a real SACD. SACD can have upto three layers - one for stereo, second for SACD stereo and third for SACD multi-channel.

It is, however, possible that your hardware player is capable of reading SACD ISO image file burnt to a DVD.

The usual way to read an ISO image of SACD is to use this foobar2000 plugin. People go to great lengths to create SACD images using PS3.

I tried the disc on a dedicated SACD player but it could not play. However on the BluRay player with SACD support, it plays and I can choose between two channel SACD and CD layers.
I too think that somehow the player is reading the iso image which got written to the DVD.
