Hi
For listening music I want to buy CD player. Since dedicated CD palyers are too costly, i am going for DVD player. Can some one recomand DVD player which give good sound quality in stereo mode? Any specific brand known for good SQ

My budget is upto 5K.

None of the current generation DVD Players give you anyway near to good sound ! Don't waste your money on these,Instead either buy a used CDP which would easily be available at your 5K budget or use your existing player and buy a USB dac which would not be on par with a CDP but will certainly sound better than any DVD Player that is sold in todays date or otherwise.

Had the The Pioneer DV-656A DVD Video, DVD Audio & SACD Player For many years
Faultless entertainment Plays everything it seems you Put in it

The Pioneer DV-656A DVD Video, DVD Audio & SACD Player

One going on E-bay For 45. pretty old hat now

Its not made of plastic and dose not clutter and bang or have any annoyances. no waiting when you power up. and its build quality Excellent as good as any Stand alone CD player . Has optical and Digital out and you can turn the display of and the Scat sockets while your playing music. Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit Audio DAC

Before HDMI Still a worthy player

There is one on sale from Oppo 981H model in the hifiads.com site. I recently got hold of a 980H model from the forum and it is very good for audio CD playback.

Congrats manniraj,
981 doesn't share same analog circuit and I thing DAC also is different than 980 which is superior.

Yes I think 980H shares the same DAC/internals as 970 but with some improvements thats what most of the online reviews say. Also I read online that the internals of 980H is similar to CA DV99 and that the CA is a re-badged DVD player of 980H. I heard both of them (albeit different places) and found them to sound similarly. I got mine which is around 6 yrs old but mostly the earlier FM used it for stereo purpose only (I found it as the RCA L/R jacks where not rusted  compared to other output jacks).

Another some nice alternative.

Pioneer DV -79, DV-47, DV-59
Marantz DV9600, DV8400

Basically any SACD/DVD player is a good CD player as well. These have nice DAC and analog soundstage.

hi, i am using the DV-655A.
Excellent player.
very good audio.seperate stereo outputs.
enjoying from last 07years.work horse.only repair done is changing the aged lens once.

You can check recent Pioneer DVD player. It will be a VFM option.
I have been using pioneer DV-600AV for many years and it is good for stereo playback. It is SACD/DVD-A player with HDMI upscaling, but I did not play any SACDs. Build quality is excellent.

Other all-in-one kind of solution would be a blu ray player. But most of the new blu rays are having only digital out and no analog audio out.

I still feel a good pioneer DVD player with 192kHz/24bit DAC will be a good option and VFM player.

Sony DVP-NS728HP. This what I currently use. I went to a good local electronics store in TVM and I auditioned few dvd players by connecting each player to a hifi in the store.

The sales man was very reluctant but I insisted and they let me play my audio cd on each player and finally I liked the audio quality of this Sony out of the lot. SQ (analog) was my priority, so I didn't care to about PQ or other functions.

Sony VCD player in the image had good SQ. I swapped op amps in the circuit. It had functions like M-bass, X-wide and music level 'low, mid, high'. The problem was that the pick-up/eye is troublesome and was almost a headache to maintain and properly run this player. The one with me is long dead.

There was a vcd player named Mitsui (IIRC) which was not bad either.

hi all,
Used oppo dvd players are a good option. I bought one 981hd recently from another fm. I am satisfied with the audio and video quality of the player. Also it doesnt need the tv to be switched on if you want to play audio cds.If you are open to used items, there is a sale of 980 now going on in for sale section. Check out if it suits your need.

I would recommend buying a cd/dvd/bluray player that has a digital out and also to buy a separate DAC for playing stereo music. There are good DACs in the $200 (USA) range now. Even lower prices for the original audioquest dragonfly (I think it can be had $99 now) if you can use USB and a computer to access your music.

These days you may as well have a computer as your music source for digital files. But if you have a lot of CDs then you need a transport.

You'll want a player that has coax or optical out so you can connect to the DAC.

I have the Sony DVPNS57 for some time now. We got it for free with our Sony TV (I think the original cost was 2.9k and it was made in Malaysia). Plays audio cds with lovely quality. Infact I was using it as my audio cd player for some time, when my CD63SE's laser transport went out. It also plays back MP3 with very decent quality and the best part of it is that it has a bullet proof high precision laser transport, will play anything that is thrown at it. Hence it now sits on my rack as my second cd player. If an old cd appears from a friend or if we get hold of mp3 cds, its put into use. Its as old as my elder son now (7 years) and still functions perfectly well.

Here's an old pic of the DVD player sitting on my rack (over the NAD tuner)

So basically there is no CD/DVD player in the market within 10K worth buying?

The reviews of Pioneer BDP-160 blu ray player are quite good and it even plays flac. Although Indian price is nearly 12000 in most places, ebay seems to be having some at under 9000.
You could see the review and details to see if its useful for you.
I am also considering it but haven't bought it yet.

I have been using Pioneer BDP 160 as a CD player for last couple of months. Extremely good output. As I am a vinyl buff, I do not want to invest much for a dedicated CD player. This has analogue output and very detailed and smooth sounding. Very happy with this player.

Thanks for the review Sourav!

Sourav, is your player Region-A or for India?
Could you share your experience using it with a pen drive and/or external USB disk?
Have you tried any Indian VCDs/DVDs with it? What was your experience with them?
