Hello all,
I am planning to buy good speakers. I mostly listen to trance hence good bass is must ( I am bass head :D ). After doing research I found Cerwin Vega suffice my need. Luckily I am getting offer for 8 years old Cerwin Vega VE12F and Marantz PM7000. I am very new to this audiophile world so I need your help. :)

Specs : Cerwin Vega VE-12 12" 3-Way Tower Floorstanding Speaker features Peak Power: 300 watts, Frequency Response: 28 Hz - 20 kHz, 5-1/4" Midrange with Fiber Impregnated Cone, 1-1/4" Treated Silver Mylar Tweeter with Ferro Fluid, 12" Cast Frame High Excursion Woofer

Few queries
1)VE12F peak power is 300W and sensitivity is 93 dB.Marantz quotes its specifications as 2x95W into 8 Ohms, 20-20,000 Hz, with no more than 0.03% THD. This rises to 2x150W into 4 Ohms. Maximum power output is quoted as 120/195W into 8/4 Ohms. Will Marantz PM7000 will be able to drive them well at Medium - low volume? I wont be turning music too loud anyway but I heard these speakers sound bad if we underpower them

2) I am gonna place them below my computer table .Distance between them will be 3 feet.Listening position will 2,2.5 feet away.Plus not much distance between wall behind speakers. So will they sound good this close ?

3)Is VE12F for 23k(10 years old) and Marantz PM7000 without remote for 10k(9 years old) good deal ?

4)I will be able to connect the above setup with PC. Sound card is Xonar DX. Just want to confirm, above combo work with PC.
5) my alternative for speakers is Polk audio tsi200 plus bookshelf plus psw110 sub. If I just get the amp, I think I wont be able to connect sub woofer. I will need av reciever 5.1 or 7.1 .I am right. ?

A lot of other factors go into the selection of your system...if you go through the threads here, you might get the most important ones...

Cerwin Vega IMHO are pretty bright...in fact I'd go to the extend of terming them as shrilly...considering your choice of music (trance) they might appear to be pretty forceful at first but might give you an ear fatique over prolonged listening...

I suggest, depending on your room size, consider a good pair of bookshelves and a sub...

This is a strange situation.Considering ur listening position and speaker placement, these are wayyy overkill IMHO.They are nothing like the hi fi speakers and are rather bullying/reeks of power. But at the same time, should suit the bass head in you.Can easily fill a hall of say 500 sq ft and need some decent breathing space on all sides.I would say around 6 ft apart and a good couple of ft from the rear(rear ported if i remember correctly). Not saying u can't fir them to ur spacing constraints, just that it will be wasted potential. If u use them for movie watching/music listening at say, 6 ft+ distance, then they are a better investment IMO.I feel like recommending u a pair of active speakers seeing your requirements.

Like soulforged mentioned, these will be hard to tame especially for a music lover,be it their bass or treble. The above amp should drive it just fine since I have heard lots of AVRs under 100WPC @ 8 ohms driving CVs to insane(by my scale!!!) volume levels but thats a different model(in my sig). But will it be by ur taste, only u can tell after an audition. These are meant to be movie speakers with occasional loud music in the menu and typically by CV standards, these should produce SOME SERIOUS VOLUME.If u LIKE them, it would be hard to go back to puny hifi speakers.

And last but not the least, try to haggle a bit and get the pricing to 20k even though I am in the minority of thinking 23k is fair enough.

@imrahan thanks for very descriptive answer. You have made think that I should go for smaller bookshelf set. But I think subwoofer is must Considering basshead in ME. Will cerwins sound bad if I keep it just half foot away from wall. ?
How will Polk audio bookshelf tsi200 + sub psw 110 + Yamaha 371 combination. ? Is it really worth spending nearly 50k for this setup. ? Compared to cerwins and marantz which I am getting for around 33k. I read in some forums that for trance music Fs is better than bs. Plus stereo reciever plus sub will degrade actual sound quality for music as music is meant for 2 chanels. This actually made me think for Fs like cerwin Vega even though my room is small

For your listening environment, keeping in mind the listening distance is quite small, your best bet is a pair of satellite speakers (small bookshelf speakers) and 10 inch subwoofer.

Speakers like cerwin vegas need large spaces with a minimum of ten feet between the tweeter and listener.

Hi,

As a simple suggestion to you, you should go with the bookshelves of cerwin vega (if at all you want to go with the cv brand) as these seem to be quite heavy and may deliver a good bass. I have seen them but unfortunately had no change to audition them. 12" 2 floorstanders will be a nuisance to your room size as they will sound pretty loud and will occupy some good space. You will repent on your purchase.

These speakers are very good and I have the CLS 10 driving them with the Yamaha A-S500 amp. They sound crisp and professional.

Some people have a diff opinion with the cvs but I'm definitely happy with them as they sound great evern with a quarter volume on.

imo the cerwin vegas are party speakers. big sound and bright but definitely unrefined. you get a lot more musical speakers out there - i think you should give a listen to a few systems before you decide
