Hello Folks,

I was searching for a cheap, safe and good place to visit. Sure we all would consider Thailand for that, but would like to get inputs from you guys too. People who have taken such trips would be particularly helpful. My requirements are:

1. Distance does not matter, but airfare does; so lower airfares.
2. Safe.
3. Visa on arrival/ No visa.
4. Overall not too expensive to stay/ eat.

Basically a total budget destination obviously for Indians.

Thanks in anticipation of help.

Regards,
Saket

Middle East, particularly Abu Dhabi and Dubai are cheap. It is also easy to get visit visas to Dubai.

After that we have Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in that order of cost. Sri Lanka is also there but it looks just like any Indian city.

One option is fly on Srilankan airlines and enjoy their transit stay. I am not sure if they still have this offer but they used to have a free transit stay in Negombo (which is where the international airport is situated). For example if you fly to Malaysia via Srilankan airlines, you will first reach Srilanka at around 11 AM. Your connecting flight to Malaysia will be only on the next day early morning (around 6 AM). So the Srilankan airlines officials give you free stay and food on some beach resort (usually) that is close to the airport. They drop you off at noon and will pick you up next morning around 3 hours before the flight time. In the mean time you can even arrange a taxi for yourself and go for a city tour to Colombo which is about 35 km from the airport.

Using a package provided by travel agency is recommended as they always get better air fares and room rents than what you see on the airline/hotel sites. They also plan the tour very well and make sure you see the place thoroughly. Otherwise you will have to explore the city yourself which can be difficult in an unfamiliar country.

Sri Lanka if you get outside of Colombo is quite nice.

Yes George, Sri Lanka looks like a beautiful place. Air fares are cheaper too but the current political scenario & considering the current state of terms between India & Srilanka, I would prefer to wait for things to calm down.

But thanks a lot to you & Naveen for pouring in the ideas.

Best Regards,
Saket

Welcome..What about Nepal?

Yes, Nepal is again a nice place...high on my travel radar! Last year-end, I had a lovely tour of Bhutan.

BTW, I transited Ranchi airport( from Delhi) about a year ago, enroute to Jamshedpur..

Next time you plan such a route, I will be more than glad to host a lunch at my place! BTW, any acquaintance in Jamshedpur?

Saket

right now a lot of people considering former soviet countries -but really do not know detals and ther issues like safety.

Hi Saket

I studied at XLRI and have retained connections there. In addition I have many friends there including FM Sh.aks07, who is a vacuum tube and vinyl ustaad. Usually I travel there via Cal, but on the last trip I was at Delhi on work and was advised that from there Ranchi was the preferred option. Unfortunately the highway was in very poor shape, but I believe it is now a lot better.

If an opportunity comes to visit Ranchi again I definitely will take up your offer, thanks.

XLRI is a very reputed institute. I am also a Xavier's product; I did my MBA from XISS Ranchi.
And yes, the highway has improved a lot now and the same can be done in 2.5 hours.
If you come to Ranchi again, I will be glad to meet a fellow visionmate!

I was going to suggest Bhutan (went there about 5 years ago), but you have already been there! It's such a beautiful place - more Indians should go there.

Bangladesh, especially if you want try something different from the usual thailand, malaysia kind of places, is also worth a look. The sunderbans, and many other interesting locations that are still not spoilt by tourists.

I would still put Sri Lanka high up in the list, though you have to get out of the major cities to appreciate what Sri Lanka can offer.

Best,
APK

Yup, Bhutan is a great place if you are looking for a relaxing holiday away from crowds & regular beaches. Being comparatively easy to visit for Indians than any other nationals both in terms of money & permit/ visa, it should a must visit for Indians.

Hmmm...not too many people suggesting Bangladesh. I believe it has a St. Martin's Island for experiencing a beach plus other places too. Should be a nice experience. Sri-Lanka has been high on my travel radar since 2-3 years, but as the current political scenario does not encourages the visit. However, I wish to see the country once things improve.

Thanks,

Yup, I like to stay away from package deals. Thanks for the info. Good luck for your trip, whenever you plan to go to London.

Hey Saket - Why dont you look up Indonesia, Bali. Bali is a lovely place. Especially the Nusa Dua area for staying.

Cheers...

Good place, nice reviews. Getting confused between a lot of options. However, my plans have taken a hit as I have to attend to a loss of a loved one in family. But thanks for the idea.

That looks amazing! Truely. It gets me drooling every-time I think about Thailand travel. But as I said earlier, plans are getting extended. May be some time later this year.

Thanks a lot everyone for the ideas. Will surely look into all options before deciding over them and be sure, I will bug you guys again!
