Cheap XBMC Box = Raspberry Pi ?

A quick update, I was able to get my ODAC detected under the Audio output and set it as default. This feature was enabled after I went into the Raspbmc (running the latest Gotham 13.1 I think version) settings and enabled the external sound card feature. But initially it was not detected and then I realized that I had connected the ODAC directly to the PI, so now connected it using a powered Belkin USB hub and it works now without any issues. The quality of WAV/FLAC music is very good but unfortunately unable to get the sound over DAC for video playback. It seems thats how its going to work for videos with external sound card as the video gets played over HDMI by default for both video/audio.

That's a good find

But I agree to your point that the Openelec is sleek and fast when compared to Raspbmc as it boots faster and runs quickly for playback but unfortunately I am missing out on the external DAC feature. I hope that enabling the external sound card feature does not break anything as some of the users have experienced of frequent hangs and reboots. Lets see how it goes through. Otherwise for normal media playback Openelec is the way to go. Hopefully they should support the external sound card feature in the upcoming releases.

I forgot to add the feature of CEC HDMI that shows up immediately when the PI boots to XBMC on the Raspbmc. I am not sure what it does but it looks like it automatically controls the TV and vice versa. When I shutdown the PI on the Raspbmc then the TV (model Sony Ex300 - 26") also is switched off. I did see some of these settings under the option of Peripherals on XBMC. I think I need to read further on how to disable/enable these features. By the way I was able to run the PI using the TVs USB port successfully without any problem but with the CEC HDMI feature it does not shutdown properly as the TV also gets switched off automatically :p when the PI is shutdown.

the cec hdmi is there on openelec too. once active u can use the tv remote to control xbmc. its an extremely handy feature reducing any further clutter !! u can use the direction keys, play. pause. return etc

Today I encountered the "Heartbleed" problem and my PI keeps rebooting without getting into the XBMC. Looks like the OpenSSL bug which a PI encounters when using Raspbmc which I am not able to resolve with SSH and upgrading. So reverted back to Openelec :p

Raspberry Pi with openelec all fired and running thanks a ton to Dheeraj and everyone!

Now, I want to stream HD movies from the raspberry pi to my LG TV. TV has a LAN port, so I want to plug a wireless router next to the TV and then hardwire it to the TV.

Also, I want to connect this router to the rest of the wireless network, so I should put it in bridge mode right? Still looking for an affordable router for this, so basically two questions here.

1) Streaming from Pi? Does one use Plex for this?

2) Router to connect the TV wirelessly to the house.

I'm using TP-Link 740n router to connect all my devices. For raspberry wifi Edup usb mini dongle is used. If you have any doubt regarding wi-fi connection in raspberry please feel free to ask.

Thanks Baiju, is the router dd-wrt compatible?

Buddy, no the Pi is not connected to the TV. It is placed in another room. My plan is to get an additional router (preferably dd-wrt compatible), connect it hardwired to TV and then wirelessly to rest of network. Then stream movies from Pi to TV via wireless! Is it possible?

It can be flashed with dd-wrt. I tried it but later restored to the original firmware. You can also look for 300mbps version.

I have not tried streaming from pi to tv, but it should be possible. I can browse the content of the pendrive attached to pi and play files in my pc through the wi-fi connection. I think you can install miniDLNA in Raspberry pi for streaming purpose.

Using your Raspberry Pi as a DLNA/UPnP media Server

Will try it out. The TV is LG 42LD650, but the DLNA compatibility seems to work (as per manual) using their propietary dongle, so I am not sure if it will work with direct LAN, but I will try it out....thanks bud.

I was able to overcome this bug by SSHing and upgrading the Raspbmc with the latest OpenSSL and now the PI is stable and it plays the music over ODAC to my Marantz amplifier beautifully. All my music files are stored on the LAN. The FLAC/WAV files play superbly with source direct on the amplifier. There is also an option like "Audio passthrough" yet to try this feature when the music is played back on ODAC. As this feature is mostly suitable for the audio pass through for a movie playback connected to a AV receiver.

@dheeraj

Today I again tried the Openelec (in fact I have 2 SD cards one with Raspbmc and another with Openelec) and it got updated to 4.0.5 and to my surprise I got the option to choose the external DAC and play over it. I also enabled the audio passthrough and chose the DAC as the pass through device. The music is playing smoothly over LAN. You can try the same, I think I am going to keep the Openelec as it ticks all my requirements now.

@manniraj
Thanks man... but my udac gives clicking sounds with rpi. Works fine with other linux boxes though. Three through powered usb hubs too as earlier I thought it could be a power issue but to no avail. So went and bought the wolfson.

But this is a great for all here with good usb dacs.

Hmm I hope it plays and stays stable :p and now I am running the PI + Wireless Lenovo remote + ODAC on my belkin powered USB hub, so no issues so far. I think your Wolfson is anyway officially supported on PI, so should be simple and good setup pairing.

Yes with good USB DACs it should be a cheap music player setup. With my ODAC its clean and neutral and I use the XBMC remote app on my iPhone so it basically is headless.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
