Confused - 47LH50 or 50PQ70 from LG -Please Help Experts

I read about LG 50PK590 on CNET's UK site. They have reviewed it very favourably (link - LG PK590 (50PK590) Review on CNET UK). I sent a mail yesterday to LG India asking if they are going to introduce any 50" full HD plasma like LG 50PK590 in India as they have only 60PS80FR full HD plasma TV for sale here. I received a reply today saying that they have launched 50PK550 , a 50" full HD model in India. This model is available at Woolworth stores.

I have further asked them to confirm if Woolworth stores and Croma stores are one and the same and also give out the MRP of 50PK550.

spoke to one guy BALAJI from LG - he is the guy for PLASMA TVs , he said another 15 days the PK and PJ series will be available everywhere including CROMA , he was unaware of the pricing tho stating that they were new models.

To be clear..

I am not sure about the capabilities of the LG PJs. One thing sure is they look great.
Black levels, Colour reproduction, TIR, Contrast etc need to be assessed by you before purchase.
These need to be improved a lot compared to PQ series to have a comparable PQ to samsung or panasonic lot of plasmas.

Going by the trend, Even if there are NO changes in the C450/C550 compared to B series, they are good to take home without second thoughts at the prices they are being quoted at. But I persume minor changes in PQ in addition to external changes (slim etc)

Please have a demo and evaluate your preferences. Also be noted that USB playback and bluetooth in LG are next to useless in 2009 series. There could be commendable changes in the 2010 series to make them a better buy. (Samsung 6+ series have great playback capabilities even in 2009 models with PQ settings and mkv playback etc. These could have improved better in 2010 models.)

Hope it helps.

scarlet,

look for 2010 line 50 inch plasmas (samsung c450/c550, LG PJ series)..they are cheap/slim/light compared to 2009 models..plus you will get a new piece definitely..

with 2009 models, you will have be careful that your dealer doesn't pass you an abused display/demo piece..

there is a 50LGPK550 available
box piece
its a full HD 1080 PLASMA

is the PK series a 2010 model
how much better is it compared to PQ series plasmas
considering that the PQ series is a 2009 model

kindly help guys saturday is just round the corner

LG Web site shows 50PJ560R for MRP of Rs 73,990. There is no mention of PK series.

It is disappointing to note that 50PJ560R has no HDMI input on side and only 2 HDMI inputs at rear.

Please go through the specifications and comment.

As per mail received by me from LG on 05 May 2010, they have launched 50PK550 (full HD) in India and is available with Woolworth stores. Wonder, why they are not showing it on their web site.

Does anyone know of any Woolworth stores?

Woolworth could be the same as Chroma..

As per wikipedia "Croma/Tata Group Venture In 2006 Woolworths and the Tata Group of India announced an electronics retailing venture on the subcontinent. Due to the legal framework, foreign companies are prevented from operating retail businesses in India. Due to this, Woolworths will act as a wholesaler to the Tata Group. "

my suggestion would be never to make such a big investment in a hurry, there are new sets coming in a weeks time for both LG as well as Samsung, don't go for Panasonic for obvious reasons (deteriorating black levels after 200 hours of usage).

The PK series is the new 2010 series
and in Samsung 2009 model had a B written between their screen size and series number whereas for 2010 it's a C

for your price range the best options are
1) Samsung 50c550 50" full HD plasma
2)LG50PK550 50" full HD plasma

Keep in mind that SDTV content on LG plasma will not be very good, and this was present in 2009 models and it remains to be a problem in 2010 models, the SD content for Samsung is better than LG although not very good but still it is good, and cosidering that india has not and most probably won't go HD for a long time (atleast 2- 3 years is my guess), that is the only reason i would suggest the Samsung set above LG but beware of the Samsung buzz issue as well.

You should also consider that the new sets are energy star 4 compliant which is a more stringent set of rules therefore there will be a considerable decrease in power usage from last years models that u have quoted which seemed to consume around 400W

Also u should never pin your hopes on just one store, that gives them an upper hand, its wise to wait for the product to be launched countrywide, then only should you go for it

Be patient and don't hurry into buying something u will regret later

Just to give an example : Everyone was so excited for the Panasonic sets and most people bought them off the stands, and I know most won't admit but they made a mistake and got caught up in the hype and now have to deal with it, since 65k is a huge amount of investment, so patience is a virtue, Samsung has proved with their last year plasma performance that their product even though not better than panasonic PQ wise but is certainly a more dependable option.

Let me put some facts pertaining to 2009 plasmas (alone). Most might have been fixed/improved in 2010 plasmas.

Panasonic had the best blacks. LG worst and samsung inbetween. Even considering that panasonic shreds off black level in 200 hours, IMO it will not go to the range of LG or below. So if are looking at an LG plasma and you like the PQ, there is nothing to fear of buying a panasonic. We discuss a lot about the shredding part but not the initial black level which will still make the PQ great after accounting for the shredding part.

Samsung had the best colour reproduction with a 18 bit panel. I mean, in side by side comparison, It is clearly visible at a glance. LG had a blue push and panasonic did not impress!

Panasonic is the winner in horizontal motion resolution again. LG comes second and samsung last though the difference is minimal.

Panasonic & Samsung did not have IR issues for the most part but LG is a IR magnet!!

LG wins hands down in sound, features and look. Samsung looks ok and I did not like the looks of the panasonics at all (personal).

Panasonics were the brightest (and a bit unnatural in colour reproduction due to that). LG and samsung comes next to that. LG has the peculiar non-linear increments in colour/contrast/brightness scale which is an attempt to make them look brighter while they are not. LG also calls their panels super bright panels which is ironic.

Samsung is the best in upscaling SD content by a huge margin. LG comes next and panasonic last.

These can be termed as general guidelines for the brands but nothing concrete for the 2010 models.
