Confused which model to buy DS413j/DS412+/DS414 ????

Can you list me few features you use extensively in your NAS machine? that are not possible with a PC built for nas purpose?

also, why would you run a full nas with all drives connected just for download manager? it means while downloading it will consume minimum power. for downloads i use router D-Link dir-685 and all my contents are saved in the hdd itself and it consumes less than 5 watts.

Yes, i do agree on the smaller footprint...

Oh lot of things I can list, but few of my fav are .....,,,,,,,,,,,(keeping UNRAID and OVM in mind since I only used these NAS OS extensively, but the limitation should follow other NAS as well as most of them are Linux based)

1. The first and most loved feature is the download manager, with an 8mbps connection and 250 GB FUP, you know you rely on loads of download. Synology's DM is THE most comprehensive DM I have come across. On UNRAID or any other Linux NAS the best you have is torrent download via Transmission. or the likes. You cannot automate direct downloads from like Rapidshare specially if you have a premium account that requires UN and password. With Synology DM you can.
Then comes NZB downloads via USENET. There is no quality dedicated usenet client to download NZB, (yes we have couchpotato, but only I know how much of configuration it needed to work smoothly and actually the way it is supposed to work) with Synology DM it was a piece of cake and you can auto mate it fully within the build in DM

2. Then comes the flv, youtube videos .....with chrome plugin, which gives you a neat link right next to the youtube video or any flv video you play and you can download the video straight to your NAS.

With UNRAID atleast I was not able to find any such way for youtube videos download

3. Last come the best part ....... With synology download station chrome client you can add any download (all types that I mentioned) from any where around the world straight to your NAS and it download using your home broadband internet speed. (I love this feature) I guess avink also mentioned the same.

4. Logitech Media Server : Which did require quite a bit of learning curve if I had to configure it the way I wanted on UNRAID.

5. Comprehensive Photostation, I just love this ..... there is no such thing on UNRAID or OVM or any NAS OS for that matter. I have uploaded all my relatives snaps on photostation and provided personal access to my relatives with their persona login IDs, they are so happy. Plus if I have to show my snaps on the go, photostation Android app makes it so so easy and intuitive as well
.
6. Cloud Backup :: If I had to backup my family snaps on cloud as well (auto back for that matter) with unraid there was no such option, or even if it was there I could not find one. With synology all I have to do is link my NAS to the same. And this is professional cloud backup I am talking about not the casual commercial cloud services like dropbox.

Then on a higher technical note I can create LUNs on my NAS, with full support with VMWare and Hyper-V, I can also install directory services and make my NAS a part of my own domain

From security perspective I love the IP auto block feature which will block any IP trying to gain access to my NAS services after n number of unsuccessful tries. There was no such feature in UNRAID

Using and installing SSL on unraid did require a learning curve, here, synology has made it quite simple.

Power Saving, though with UNRAID I was able to auto shut the system it really took an effort for me to auto switch on the PC (UNRAID) at a specific time, though I was able to achieve this, but took a little while and effort

With Synology it is just a matter of putting a checkmark of switch on and switch off :-)

What else ... ????? the complete GUI of Synology drools with quality.......unraid, OVM, FreeNAS all had crappy to okiesh GUI. Complete feel of this NAS is on a different level all together. I enjoyed UNRAID due to various other reasons but Synology wins hands down when it comes to Home NAS, pre built or a DYI.

Hope this was enough I can go deeper but I guess this should give you an idea.

Plus I very much agree with dheerajjotwani. I guess I said the same thing in my post no 12 ....
A pre build NAS sure is expensive but its no way less in features, infact in a DIY to achieve the same level of features than a pre built NAS has (specially like Synology), you have to put quite an effort, which can some time require a decent level of learning curve as well, specially if you are dealing with a Linux machine. (which most of the NAS are)

wow, that's a lot of features...
guess finally it comes down to personal needs, but well put points

A marginal improvement on hardware front ...... dual core cpu and USB 3.0, still no increase in RAM .......... s/w wise its going to be same as all synology product uses DMS 5.X OS.
