Hi,

When I play a DVD in my blu-ray player Sony BDP-S360, it shows "Dolby Digital 3/2.1 48khz" when I select "Play" from root menu. It is detected as dolby digital by my receiver and I can hear sounds from all 5 speakers and subwoofer. I am wondering why it says "2.1". Can anyone throw some light on this?

Spiro, I thought 2.1 referred to two fronts and a LFE?

I think the Sony is not decoding properly. Would need a settings change.

Cheers

I think the OP stated that the display shows 'Dolby Digital 3/2.1' and not 'Dolby Digital 2.1'. Although, 'Dolby Digital 3/2.1' is a rather strange and new way to state it, I think it means the same as 'Dolby Digital 5.1'. As 'spirovious' has stated, it simply means "3 fronts, 2 rears & 1 SW".

This had happened to me when i played DVD source on my Onida DVD player. When i play a DTS source it shows only DTS 5.1 & when we select DD it is either 3/2.1 or 5.1

Its an old Sony habit. I remember a Sony DVDp I owned a few years back, before HDMI became common, also used to say "DD 3/2.1".

Well my Onkyo AVR shows similarly(DD 3/2.1)when I press Display button when playing DD/Dts file.
I think askii2 is saying similar on his display.Where 3 are fronts(front + centre as said in earlier post)& rest 2.1(surr + SW).

Thanks everyone. 3/2.1 has to mean 3 front + 2 rear + 1 subwoofer since I hear sounds from all 5 speakers and the sub.

3/2.1
====
3 denotes the front left , center and front right channel.
2 denotes the rear left and rear right
.1 denotes the LFE channel (Subwoofer Output)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
