Hi All,

I am looking to purchase 32" LED TV. After visits to Croma and Reliance Digital, came to know about Slim LED TV (using Edge LED) and regular LED TV (using Backlit LED). Please advice what is the difference between the two. Also advice which is better Sony or Samsung.

Regards,
Sumit

Thanks for the info. As I can understood from these links, Edge LED TV has only the advantage of being thinner and not much difference in Picture Quality. Then why are they more expensive than Back lit LED TV.

@sumitseth
You are referring to Samsung EH5000 I'm sure.

Let me explain it for you. These Samsung TVs feature what's called Full Array LED back lighting WITHOUT Local Dimming. What that basically means is the the LEDs are placed behind the panel itself and not just along the edges as in EDGE LED models.

So how are they cheaper than EDGE LED?

Well they are cheaper because even though its using Full Array backlighting, its achieved by using lesser number of LEDs than even EDGE LED models. Which is why Samsung can produce these TVs for cheaper than the EDGE LED counterparts.

What is the advantage of this full array backlighting ?

Very little actually. Except for MAYBE better uniformity they have no advantage in picture quality compared to EDGE LED models and in fact maybe worse actually.

What's a TRUE Full Array LED backlight system ?

The TRUE Full Array TVs use multiple clusters of LEDs which can be locally brightened or dimmed. This is known as Local Dimming. In India currently there is only 1 Full Array Local Dimming TV on sale - Sony Bravia HX925 starting at 2.5 lacs.
This is found only in ultra high end models and the benefit of this is absolutely black blacks and high contrast.

So don't worry about the Samsung Full Array it's just pointless and has no advantage. Better get an EDGE LED model.

sony's latest introduction is HX 750 series with Dynamic Edge Led with Frame Dimming-
and
1129:1 contrast ratio - which is best in this category
3d - not in full HD (only 720p)

In terms of picture quality - LCD < Edge LED < Backlit LED

The colours are more distinct in backlit LEDs because they can be supplemented through local dimming. Edge LEDs are thin because they dont have the full array of LEDs (being Edge only) and allow for colour manipulation to only a certain extent.

Sir, he is asking about full array without local dimming. Dont confuse him again by talking about local dimming.

Never ask about why this price or why that price.

Pricing is there because there are people who are willing to buy at that rate.
If you don't see any value, you have all the right to refuse the more expensive item, and go for the less expensive one!

The 40EH5000 is the cheapest LED TV I found of the major companies, in that size, and the pic quality is better than ordinary LCDs. If the OP found it worthy and is within his budget, he can go for it, in view of what explained above. Please correct me if I am wrong.

@alpha1

I think you don't understand his question. He was confused and hence asked why the Full Array models are cheaper than Edge LED when he had been told that Full Array is way superior. Nothing wrong in him asking why Edge LED model is more expensive.

So I think you should go through the thread properly first and not make such a statement. Quite unnecessary IMO.

@god2007

If it's good then he may go for it but it is not better than the slightly more expensive Edge LED models. That is what OP's confusion is. And online reviews including CNET feel the same way that these full array without local dimming EH5000 models have worse PQ than their Edge LED counterparts especially when it comes to black levels, contrast and viewing angles.

Thanks all for sharing your thoughts. Based on the information shared, I have decided to go for 32" Edge LED TV from Sony or Samsung:

SONY 32EX550 (HD READY)
SONY 32EX650 (Full HD)
SAMSUNG UA32ES5600 (Full HD + Wifi Dongle)

Please advice which is the best of all. How much PQ difference will be there between Sony Models when watching HD channels on Tata Sky +

The difference will be not huge for sure, maybe you could say 5-10% better at most.
Colors are better on Sony.

Just go with whichever you're getting for cheaper. Both the EX650 and ES5600 are good TVs.

On the contrary, the response was EXACTLY meant for his question.
Why don't you read his statement/question in bold?
