My audio rig has been going through a bit of problem for the past few months. My amp (Leben CS300) and my CDP (CA 740c) have been having some problems. Apparently I need a new lens for the CDP and it has been ordered. Apparently it has already arrived in Kolkata, but I am yet to receive it. The amp had the volume pot problem. I ordered a new volume pot (Alps) and I have already received it, although it is yet to be fixed in my amp. The problem of the amp manifested itself in one noisy channel, and hearing the symptoms everybody suggested that it is the volume pot. Usually with time there is some carbon deposition and it results in the problems.

Today Vasu (myriad) came to my place with a bagful of vinyl records and some other stuff to test out my Scheu Cello TT, although I had already warned him about the problems with the volume pot of the amp. He listened to the sound for a while, and then from his bag got a can out.The can was a Caig D5 contact cleaner. We got the amp out of the shelf, opened up the top cover, and then very carefully Vasu injected one spray of that magic contact cleaner right at the place where the volume knob is connected to the volume pot. We waited a few minutes, and then put back the amp and hooked all the cables.

It was indeed magic. All the trouble with the volume pot was gone. The right channel came out as beautifully as the left. Not only the noise was gone, the sound generally improved, became a lot cleaner and more musical.

Of course, I need to keep the situation under observation. But it is very clear to me that the contact cleaner really works. I am going to get one for myself from needle doctor or musicdirect. For the moment I have a spare volume pot and heartfelt thanks to Vasu.

Regards.
