Hi all

Demoed Sony 46 EX 520, CX 520 and Samsung 46 D 5500 today at Trivadrum.

Picture quality evaluated with blue ray movie, HD and SD channels from Tata sky, Dish TV and non digital channels from local cable network provider.

Sony models Picture quality much better than samsung, colour contrast and refreshment are good. Even though the brightness is little lower than Samsung, Sony generates natural colour. No significant ghosting effect detected with sony. CX model shows mild low contrast and brightness in similar settings, but it is not very much appreciable, picture quality is almost same. Both models show no significant difference in the picture quality when viewing HD or SD channels. Sony gives extra Internet capabilities like opera, Skye, u tube ....etc.

Samsung really disappointed me in its picture quality. It is not generating natural colour, instead it produces high contrast images. But the most noticeable is the severe ghosting (eventhough with the extrapolated 100hz refresh rate). It has no Internet functionalities. Only advantage I felt for Samsung is its lower price compared to Sony EX 520.

Audio quality did not show any significant appreciable difference in all these models.

They have quoted 89K for sony46 EX 520; 69K for 46 CX 520; and 82K for samsung 46D 5500.

I have decided to buy Sony EX 520 within two days.

I need your suggestions about my views and decision.

This is my personal observations, please correct me if my perceptions are wrong.

Thanks in advance.

I am also planning to choose between Sony NX710, Samsung 40D 5000 but am currently stuck because i couldnt see them neck to neck in one go and realize the difference.
But I too found Samsung contrasts a little too high and color saturation also upped a bit. But these things are definitely manipulable / configurable.
Would love to hear something added as comments by veterans.

If you didnt find any appreciable difference between the CX and EX in terms of picture quality, why would you pay 20k more? Are looks worth 20k?

Well both the EX520 and CX520 have a SPVA panel, the EX520 has lower power consumption so its you want to go green or use UPS/inverter and have long power cuts go with the EX520.

As with Sony if you don't mind the lack of warranty you could buy them in grey market,CX520 should cost less then 60k.

Do note the above sony models won't play MKV formats or support NTFS formatted HDD.

Thank you very much for all your reply

Decided to buy EX 520, due to its lower power conception, possible blurring of the edges and reduction in brighness of CX model after some time.

Thanks for all reply.

I preferred EX than CX, because of the possible long term edge blurring, overal brightness reducion of CX and is hig power conception.

If not NTFS formatted HDD, then what file system sony is supportiong? then how can we connect these HDD to PC to tranfer files?

It should read FAT.

Agree. Compared SONY EX520 Samsung Dxxxx side by side. Sony had natural color of skin where as Samsung was over saturated. Also the shadow of a tree I found more black in SONY compared to Samsung where it was little hedgy.

Sound wise SONY has double the sound of Samsung. You can live without a sound bar in SONY, but Samsung you will definitely need one.

I am just little confused if buying from Grey market will be a good idea. They are asking 65K for 46EX520 (negotiation can lead to 56K, One person bought at 56K in front of me) where as its 90K at Reliance Digital.

If something goes wrong, Will parts be available to repair or Will the SONY centers be able to repair any fault? I think The stuffs at Gaffar Market are imported/smuggled from some east asian countries like Singapore, Thailand etc. Are the models available in Gaffar Market and SONY Showrooms/Reliance Digitam/ Chroma etc are exact same model?

Also does anybody know some good shop at Gaffar Market at Karolbagh.
I visited Prince Electronics and Music Shoppe.

Planning to buy from Music Shoppe. Any good/bad about that shop.
