Hi all,

I want to know the Diff bet DVD 5.1 Home theater system and HTS with AV Receiver. Will the sound quality differs?? Will it be more powerfull like in Theater.

Thanx

The amplifier section of a dvd 5.1 HTS is usually a very basic one. It can accept only a few inputs (some only one) where as with an avr you can connect a number of your av sources like cdp, dvd player, dth stb etc. The AVR amplifier section is much powerful and it can decode many audio formats. This is a just basic explanation for your info.

There is plenty of difference and obviously the AVR, even an entry level model, will trump the DVD 5.1 HTIB. Here are the differences:
  • even though a DVD 5.1 HTIB will state 1000W RMS, I feel that it is inflated - my sis has got a Sony DVD HTIB rated 1000W RMS and at that time I had Onkyo (Output Power: Total 580W. 90Wx5, 130W SubW) - the Sony at full volume is equiavalent to 2/3 vol of onkyo
  • as stated by Baiju, the AVR has a huge number of connectivity options; but this can be confusing, challenging and intimadating to the average user
    • Multiple HDMI inputs: from 3 to 7
    • Digital Inputs: Coaxial and optical
    • Multiple composite video inputs: from 2 to 5
    • Multiple component video inputs: from 1 to 4
    • Analogue Audio inputs for CD, Phono, Tape Deck, etc.
    • Built-in AM/FM tuner
    • Auxillary AV input from the front side
  • Middle/High end models have have iPod connectivity as well + ethernet for internet streaming radio
  • the AVR gives a scope for furture expansion
  • an array of sound decoding. To name a few:
    • Dolby Pro Logic IIz
    • HDCD Decoder
    • Dolby TrueHD
    • Dolby Digital+
    • Dolby Digital Surround EX Decoding
    • dts-HD Master Audio
    • dts ES Discrete 6.1 Decoding
    • dts ES Matrix 6.1 Decoding
    • dts Neo:6
    • dts 96/24 5.1
  • Full HD support - the newest one are also 3D ready, i.e. have HDMI 1.4a
  • most modern AVRs are 7.1 or higher
  • simulated surround processing such as hall, rock, jazz, arena/stadium, and pure stereo - although I don't care about these except stereo.
The list just goes on ...

Thanx for your good info.

AVR is power ful then y they say that it Sony HTIB has 1000WRMS and while the AVR power output specification is less.

Output power claimed by low-end HTIBs is often overrated to say the least. This is not the case with more reputed players such as Onkyo or Denon for their HTIB's. HTIBs from Samsung, Sony, LG, etc. are aimed towards the general consumer. Their price is from 16k to 30k. Once should not expect too much from that.

On the other hand, the AVR+speakers is a much costly affair. A decent AVR will start at 25k and matching speakers will be 30k min.
