Hook up just one speaker to the receiver. Leave some random distance on all the other channels that aren't hooked up and change the distance on the one that's connected from 0m to 10m or whatever the range is, and see if there's any change in SPL.

Yes, SPL drops at a rate of 6dB for every doubling of distance but that's not the only factor that can cause SPL drop. That's why the channel level setting is a separate sub-menu.
