Do I need to use speaker spikes for a FS on laminated wooden floor?

Dear friends,

Have a quick question. I have removed the sharp pointed speakers spikes when I placed my KEF iQ7 on laminated wooden floor. I removed them to protect my flooring as the sharp spikes will scratch the floor.

The question is, am I losing anything "musically" from the speakers by placing the speakers on the laminated wooden floor without the spikes.

The speaker base is flat and the speakers are very stable on the floor. I guess the spikes wouldn't add much to the sound. Just searched the net and couldn't find anything significant.

Would like to hear your comments / experience.

Thanks,
John.

Spikes are pretty much a must on wooden floors. Else you'll lose midbass and bass definition. On a hard floor (tile/marble/granite), it doesn't matter as much but on a wooden floor, its a definite must.

Use spikes with spike feet from Magma.

why have you not explored spike feet ?

I was thinking that I might not need spikes. I just started reading your thread on the same topic and realized that I would need to use the spikes. I think I will look at getting the spike feet to save the wooden floor from the sharp spikes.

Thanks,
John.

Thanks for the comment. I guess your advice applies for laminated wooden flooring right? As I mentioned earlier, I have laminated wooden flooring on a concrete floor. They are not hard wood floors though.

Thanks,
John.

I just put the spikes back to my iQ7 and carefully placed them on my wooden floors. I think I am hearing a difference. This is what happened.

1. I think the details have improved. I think now the speakers are sounding tad bit bright than before, not annoyingly bright though. I think I am hearing more details.

2. The perceived bass is reduced a bit as the details are stronger now. Earlier, the highs were not that pronounced and the bass could be easily heard. Now I feel that the earlier bass response I used to get is slightly masked by the improved details.

Overall its sounding different. Don't know if I like this sound. I just tried 3 CDs and all of them sounded different from earlier.

I will play around with the spikes on for a while and update you guys.

I will ask another pair of ears (my dad and wife) to check if they also feel the same difference.

Thanks,
John.
