Hi Guys,

planning to add dolby atmos up firing modules to my current setup, i got jamo s606 floor standers & was thinking of adding the up firing speakers on top of them for atmos format. Any recommendation in which atmos speakers i should go for? I know ceiling speakers would be best but i can't do that as have to rewire my whole bedroom & for personal reasons that won't be possible :D

Thanks.

Up firing speakers seem to be compromised on performance.. If ceiling speakers is not possible, you can consider front heights..

Look for speakers where you can mount & tilt to your listening position, something like Polk OWM 3..

so u suggest height speakers instead of the up firing atmos speakers? will rear heights be good too? i can do rear heights easier then fronts.

Cheers.

Yes.. From Audioholics -
We always recommend placing discrete speakers in the ceiling for Atmos as opposing to using upfiring methods.

Never had the oppty to demo rear heights..Which AVR do you use? Think only Yamaha has "presence speakers" with front/rear option..

Also, what are the options in your AVR for assigning height speakers?

As elangoas rightly pointed out you can just mount bookshelf speakers on the front and rear walls, just below the ceiling and angle them towards your listening positioning. Your avr will do the rest. This is much better than upfiring modules. Which are very dependent on ceiling design . If you plan on having only 2 Atmos channels, then just the rears mounted as close to vertical as possible will work best.

By the way. What is the distance from your listening position to your TV. 4 Atmos channels is supposed to be a overkill for most. IAM yet to try this setup in my room. So can't vouch for it. But always too tempting to put up as many as we can :)

i got the onkyo 656, it has the option to set the heights to front & rear. I got the jamo s602 bookshelves for surrounds, will i be able to get a decent wall mount for them so i can put them up at ceiling level & then tilt them to the listening area.

I attached a simple speaker mount (with a small square shaped platform for keeping a satellite speakers) to the base of the bookshelf speakers and mounted it on the wall like this--tilted position to the listening area, can make upward firing as well by just rotating the speakers up[emoji1] and it works pretty well!

are those mounts screwed to the bookshelves by any chance? the jamo s602 only have screw hole on the backside of the speakers for hanging the speakers to a screw, which mounts are those?

Cheers.

Do mid heights rather than front heights or rear heights. Mount a pair of speakers directly to your sides but as high as possible on the side walls, pointing down towards the listening area. You'll hear phantom imaging between those speakers, creating a soundstage overhead. Same principle as spreading two speakers in front of you and hearing sounds floating between them; except in this case it's happening above you.
