Dear FM's:

Given the weather and conditions in India: How do you protect your Hi Fi gear from dust vs. giving them enough air/clearance to breathe?

Do you place them in a enclosed AV rack to reduce the dust or prefer to keen them in an open rack.

I stay in Mumbai so dust and humidity are biggies .. planning to get a NAD but they need a lot of air to breathe too.

What is more harmful to electronic gear - dust, heat, humidy: or all :)

All three are bad however semiconductors has resist heat to a certain level however their longevity will reduce if used at high temperatures constantly. On the contrary the mix of dust and excessive humidity can kill them sooner by causing a short circuit. Preferably keep them in air conditioned rooms.

I see you are based in Mumbai, fine. But, where in Mumbai? If anywhere in Malad, Goregaon or any place near the creeks, say Mahim creek or BKC ... then, there is yet another parameter to consider .... contaminant laden bad air (typically with rotten egg smell). No sensitive electronic device can survive long or live without outrages. In some areas like Mindspace and Interface in Malad, even ACs, TVs, refrigerators take a sound beating!

The air is contaminated with hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas, which reacts with copper to form copper sulphide layer leading to enhanced corrosion. Aluminum is relatively more robust to these effects.

:) ...... GX-Severe, Air Quality as per ISA S-71.04-1985 .... :)

Daaaymmmm!!! I am only bothered by Dust and a little bit of smoke settling on my Audio instruments..!!!!! but people in Malad have it way more worse.. Anytime you need any help in this regard in HYD I ll be glad to help!!!

Given the toxic world we live in (pun intended), how do the wise men in this forum usually care for their gear? Do you:

1. Keep the gear in it's original package sealed, never use it, and sell it here 2 years later?
2. Keep it in an AC, controlled environment at ALL times
3. Keep it covered when not in use - cloth/plastic cover and remove the cover when using it.
4. Keep in an open rack and clean/dust it daily.

gracias Mucho grande..

^^ Nothing of the suggested would work, in case the air is laden with gaseous contaminants! The easiest way to 'make' your equipment work over a long stretch of time .... is to move out to a cleaner place of stay ... period!
Available solutions are only viable for hi-scale usages.

Keep a thin cloth piece over the amp (covering it in full), when not in use ... thats for dust. It suffices.

Humidity, you can't do much ... one can't expect to keep a room air conditioned for 24 hours! Treat this as an occupational hazard.

HOW ..... ?????
Are you conversant with the means/types of protection that is usually suggested?

I m sorry.. was surely vague in my previous reply. . I meant If theres anything I can do like finding out any sources which are located/available in HYD then I would definetly help you with any information to help you through as much as I can..Nope Avidyarthy I am sure I am not conversant in this field except for the very basics.. which would not assist much I guess

I listen to music in a room where the temparature is comfortable for me and not too hot. When I am not using the system, I cover the components with thick cloth covers that my wife made. While listening I remove them completely. The system is setup on an open rack. I let the amplifier cool down before covering it back again. The rack gets dirty every once in a while and then I just clean it with a vacuum cleaner and then with a moist cloth.

@ GCE: good choice .. closed amps .. hmmm.

BTW: What do you do in Italy? How is the mood like in Italy on the BIG game tonite?
