Friends,
Have a silly question here.

I am a fan of some cult movies like Maqbool, Omkara, Khosla ka Ghosla, Hasil, Gulaal, etc. While searching for a collection like these, I wasn't sure if they have BluRays available for these movies or not.

If there are no BluRays, & If I get a DVD for them >> Will I be able to get a decent good output on my 110 inches screen using Projector ?

Wish I could try them on my screen before buying ;)

Try these..
Blu-ray DVD
MyMovieMall Online Movie Store, Buy DVD Online, Buy Blu-Ray Online, Buy VCD Online, Malayalam Movies, Kannada Movies, Tamil Movies, Telugu movies, Hindi Movies, Buy Audio CD Online, Buy MP3 Online

The recent DVDs have great quality. Also most blu ray players upscale dvds. I have a good collection of both blu rays and dvds and on the projector screen (not TV) the quality is comparable. Sound though is another matter. HD sound is worth the price.

Let me get this straight.

You are basing your decision to buy a screen on the availability of a handful of films which may not have their blu rays disc released yet. am i missing something here ?

Dont get me wrong. But there are zillion other stuff which is available in blu ray disc and which is easily downloadable in HD quality that will make your screen worth the price any day. Why make that decision based on only those few films ?

Hello Buddy,
I think you got it wrong (or may be, I wasn't clear enough).

I already have a projector. But, wanted to have these quoted movies in my collection. However, they don't seem to be available in market as BluRays. That's what my query was.

a. Whether these movies are available online as BluRays ?
b. If not, will these DVDs be clear enough on my screen size (keeping in mind the clarity, sound, grains, etc)

Two things.
One, as in audio, it depends upon the source software. In the case of DVDs this is the quality of transfer to disc. With Indian movies, it can vary from great to bad.
Two, level of PQ acceptability will be different for each person.

That said, I have quite comfortably watched even good quality VCDs on my 90" screen from 12 feet.
I believe you don't need to worry :)

OK. it is indeed clearer now. Thanks for elaborating.

I ll tell u the best source. Rhythm house store's website (store closed now) shows all Blu rays released till date since the first indian BD in the order of date of release. If u dont find ur movie there, the BD version does not exist. There is very rare possibility that some other country may have released a BD of that film when India has not.

DVDs clear enough or not depends on your definition of 'clear'. Unless u haven't tried any official DVD at all yet, it will be more or less the same result for these movies too. If you havent tried any DVD yet, Easy way out is pick any Youtube trailer, download it in both formats 1080p and 480p and just compare urself. Nothing better than your own conclusion for your own definition of 'clear'.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the upconverted FHD PQ of ProjectX DVD. mind blowing !

Finally got hold of one DVD yesterday "Haasil" & the moment I started it, it came as a surprise that it wasn't covering the entire screen.

Rather it was coming in center with almost 1/3rd of the screen coming as black on all 4 sides...feeling like its a smaller screen.

I tried further with some more DVDs from my collection & some of them were like that only.
Not sure what is the reason for this, why it wasn't expanding to the max screen size.

Can we do that via some setting in our remote ?

Dude I am kinda getting the feeling that u never tried a dvd player on ur old fat CRT TV.

This is happening simply because many dvds were encoded in 4:3 and not in widescreen (16:9). They are supposed to fill screen at least side ways only on 4:3 TVs which dont exist anymore.

Even if by zoom options u r able to fill up sideways, the reason for top and bottom black bars is same as for most blu rays which have movies shot in 2.35:1. They will never fill up entire screen as screen is 1.78:1.

You can do various zoom options on remote depending on how much is allowed by your device but ofcourse it will sightly distort the image. try all 'zoom' an 'aspect ratio' related options.

Yes, you are spot ON. Though, I used to have a DVD player from ages but I never connected it to my LED TV before. The reason was simple, I could manage to get an awesome clarity on Tata Sky HD+.
Tata Sky still remains winner in mostly all movies (even if they were not shot in BluRay Quality at the time of their shoot).

Because of the larger storage capacity of the Blu-ray disc, it can hold much more video and audio data, allowing for much higher quality of video and audio. Blu-ray discs support resolutions up to 1920x1080 and frame rates up to 29.97 at the highest resolution (frame rates up to 59.94 at lower resolutions). Blu-ray discs can playback in true HD format.
