+1 to this, I've found that NAD phonostages supress surface noise more (but not too many pops and crackles) than the phonostages in Japanese amplifiers (like Akai, Technics, Sony, Nakamichi, etc).

In my experience the biggest differences are found in the styli/cart and phono preamps.

My AT120E/T is very quiet and snap/crackle/pop resilient across all of my Turntables.
The AT-95E on the comparative reproduces more crackle/pops.
This is not specific to budget either as my very humble Sony ND-14G stylus was atleast as quiet (if not quieter) as the AT120E/T and tracked superior to the AT as well.

The Preamps are amplifying the signal from the Cart so are directly related as well. Some preamps being quieter than others. the phono stage of my McIntosh Preamp is supremely smooth and crackle/pop resilient. Even more so when set to RIAA (as against LP- which is source direct). Same with the integrated phono stages of my vintage Marantz and Luxman receivers. I found external phono preamps have been more inclined to reproduce surface noise. Again, this observation has been across multiple TTs. One aberration has been the Humble Sony PS-212S, the TT is brilliant in its playback and puts some perceived better TTs in their places!

IMO, Once used to hearing vinyl without surface noise, you can never go back to enjoying a cracking vinyl. So, for vinyl with excessive surface noise, I prefer to rip the vinyl to flac and run filters for removing the clicks/pops.

Just heard two mint mint condition records I recently got, no or minimal pops and crackles. Didn't believe the sound. Conclusion..... If records are clean,u will have no pops haha :-)
