Hi All,

My cousin is planning for a NAS build, with not more than 2 HDD. Processor, Mobo, RAM is yet to be decided. He is concerned about power consumption of DIY NAS Box, comparing to off the shelf NAS boxes(for example Netgear readynas DUO consumes 35W with 2x500GB HDD). If we use a 450Watts SMPS does it really use 450Watts 24x7? Is there any SMPS which is more suitable for NAS box kind of application.

Thanks

450w woukd be the max power the smps can supply ans not what is used all the time. The usage would depend on the load connected to it.
If you are also looking for silent power picopsu is a good option. You can use it with small power adapters like laptop adapters. Refer To a thread on linear power supply from thatguy in diy section.

Is it something like this

With only one sata power cable, how can we connect 2 or more HDD disks?

Jeyaraj,

I have seen some utilities that help you to determine the power consumed by the components in the PC - so that you can decide on the optimum psu for the HTPC - unfortunately I do not have the exact url

Check xbitlabs or tomshardware

You may find it useful.
