Hi All,

Today I got a chance to connect my PC to Yamaha RX-V463 receiver through an HDMI cable.
Now, with Windows trouble comes when you need it the most. Initially, when I connected PC to receiver, no audio. Then I found that HDMI driver needs to be installed (although high definition driver was already there). Downloaded the latest driver from
Realtek

Then, I was able to see Digital Audio (HDMI) icon on my sound devices. Unfortunately, it was disabled. On sersching online online, I found there is some issues with Windows 7 and HDMI.

Totally screwed up, went ahead and checked through other forums and Windows official site. Found an update on Windows site, downloaded and installed. Now I was expecting audio output but nothing happened.

On further searching got these steps:
1. Restart your PC (make sure your receiver is on).

2. Let PC boot up.

3. If you don't see anything on your monitor, don't panic. Now turn off your receiver. You should be able to see Windows screen on your monitor.

4. Now press Windows key (start key) + P. You should get four option:
a. Computer only.
b. Duplicate.
c. Extend.
d. Projector only.
I select 'Duplicate', as I did not connected TV to my receiver.

5. Voila, now I am able to see Digital Audio (HDMI) icon on my sound devices.

6. Right click on HDMI icon and test. You should be able to hear sound.

Now about the audio quality.
It is best so far I have heard. Now flac file sounds much more clear and crisp.

But my initial expression is, it is a headache to set this up on Windows7.

.....lol... I never had to face any such head ace, maybe because I was drawing the AUDIO through HDMI out from my HD5850 and not Mobo. Neither did I install any HDMI drivers nor any windows update and so none of those steps as well. ALL I did was to install the latest catalyst drivers of my HD5850. Went to sound settings chose HDMI, went to speaker settings and chose 7.1 and click TEST..... Vola.....All sounds comming perfectly from all 6 channels. Movies and Games all playing well with full 7.1 audio.....:)
BTW incase you are wondering HERE is my set up

Your set up is excellent.

In your case I guess HD5850 card did the wonder and removed all hassles.

That seems to be the logical explanation. Or may be because Windows 7 has a huge inbuilt Driver Database that automatically took care of any missing one. But then I wonder why that didnt click with you.......anyway finally it worked is all that counts.

Hi,

Probably, there is something wrong with your MBD. I have been using Windows 7, HDMI, denon 1910 with a gigabyte MBD and have not faced any problem. Win 7 automatically detects "HD audio" (co-axial) and "Denon AVR (HDMI), I can use either one of them by disabling the other.

Cheers!

I may be wrong but my experience with Windows 7 has been awful and horrible so I decided to stay with XP.....8-))

Windows 7 and HDMI can be a pain, I use an zotac ion as my HTPC and it does give issues sometimes, but the audio over hdmi sounds great. well worth the effort!

My overall Experience with Windows 7 was bad.

Did not like any of those new features, neither are they productive.

I still prefer to stick with My Trusted Windows Vista Home Premium.

It never let me down.

do you have an ati card? I thnk you need to use the ATi driver for HDMI audio; not the realtek.
