I agree with u helium..even my sammy's panel got kaput with just 2.5 yrs of usage..repair cost is 14K with 3 months warranty..i think when i had purchased it, sammy had no concept of extended warranty..dont know what to do further.. just a piece of scrap lying at one end..

That is the main reason why I feel hesitant to spend too much on any of these flat panels! too many cases of failure after 2-3 years. For the same reason, I feel its kind of irrelevant to think about "future proof" for any such tv's.

I echo that sentiment as my hard earned money is gone down the Samsung drain.

Hi Friends,

My 3 year old tv died today and getting green vertical lines. The cost of repair is enormous 27k with 3 month Samsung warranty. Quality has deteriorated and don't have faith on their products any longer.

I'm considering buying this projection Tv.

Sony Home Theater, 45"X54" good working condition - Delhi - Home Appliances - Electronics - Hauz khas

I have experienced "Old is Gold", hence going back to basics- Quality components.

Please advise...Thank you for your time

What you will do when projector lens is gone? As they never popular in India and in US too completely phased out have you checked the availabality?

also require darkness for PJ TV - are you ready for that?? Mind well watching TV in pitch dark for movies is OK .. for news and casual programmes???? So whenever someone comes or need to check something the condition is "Andheri raat main ,diya tere haath main"

Please stay away from this set, its a projection TV, primary reason for sale could be that bulb life is over and the picture is getting dull as the bulb gets weak. Replacement bulb is not easy to find would cost at least 10 to 15k if not more, secondly spares also would not be available if something else conks out and it will be a dead expensive investment. I have one 40" Projection TV lying with me which is hardly 300 hours used, had bought a plasma post that its just taking space in one corner and is covered as no use currently and i spent over 1 lakh on this when i bought it.

You can get the LCD repaired and continue to use the same or sell it off. As Samsung is giving 3 months warranty you can sell it during that time and pass on the warranty to the buyer who would also be at peace. But check the resale cost as does not make sense to spend 27k on a tv and sell it for 25k.

Sell the TV to a scrap dealer for 5 to 10k for parts and buy a new plasma or lcd by adding another 27k or more to that investment.

The main problems with such sets:

1) Weight.
2) Space occupation.
3) Power consumption.
4) Bulb replacement.
5) Spares availability.
6) Pricing is too high, it should be a max of Rs 8000-10000 that too only if it completely working.
7) Alignment.

I would say a max of Rs 5000-8000 for such a set on a use and throw basis till OLED makes a mainstay.

Just my opinion.

Are there instances of Plasma TV's failing when compared to the LCDs?

The Samsung technician who came over to check my TV commented that, "average out of 10 TV's he check in a day, he ends up with 3 screens being faulty, in which 2 are Plasmas".

Alright folks as per your advise, I'm not going to buy the projection TV.

But I'm still in dilemma which option should I consider:-

1. Repair Samsung LED from local technician for 19k (1 month warranty)
2. Repair Samsung LED from authorized Samsung for 27k (3 month warranty)
3. Buying a new LED TV- which one has extended warranty and Japanese panel?

I really appreciate your time in sharing your feedback. Based your inputs, I will take my decision.

If you are ready to spend 27k on panel, its better to sell the TV for parts and add it along with that 27k and buy a TV with 3 years or extended warranty.

But the Samsung technician told me you would get only 2k for parts, which further adds to the confusion. I'm in a fix.

Just try to put a ad in olx giving your price. Then you would know the real asking price
If the price offered is reasonable go ahead and sell.

Thank you all for your guidance.

I finally purchased a new LED Sharp Aquos 39 Inch LC-39LE440M. The defective Samsung TV (Rs 5,000) was adjusted in the purchase and the final price I paid was 32k. The Sharp has a 3 year warranty and a panel made in Japan. I hope this time I'm not the unlucky one  and it lasts many years like my vintage audio HiFi.

Also just out of curiosity I wanted to know if the panel is prone to failure if I connect a computer, as I have made HTPC and intend to connect it to TV using HDMI.

Really appreciate your time in answering.

Have a blessed day!

Congrats man ! I also think we now should always go for extended warranty as this gives some piece of mind for at least 3 years. What make you choose Sharp Aquos ? Have you considered Toshiba ?
Congrats again.. enjoy!

Good choice helium. Sharp makes some very good panels, infact some of the Sammy's high-end TV use Sharp (hope now u dont fret). Ideally, it should not create a problem with HTPC.

Also, consider TV insurance I had posted in the TV thread after the 3 years.

I think you made the right choice by going for Sharp Aquos, they make excellent displays and price is very reasonable compared to other brands. I've seen Sharp Aquos sell like hot cakes at BestBuy, Dallas.

And you can use the TV as display for your PC and you won't have any issues. I've been using HDTVs for past 10-years as monitor. No issues till date. :)

Congrats on your purchase, Enjoy !!!
