Faith No More : Samsung led ua40c5000

Congrats man ! I also think we now should always go for extended warranty as this gives some piece of mind for at least 3 years. What make you choose Sharp Aquos ? Have you considered Toshiba ?
Congrats again.. enjoy!

Thanks Rupam, l think the Japan element made me biased towards Sharp. Also I'm a Sharp man :) Fridge, microwave and now Tv are all Sharp.

Good choice helium. Sharp makes some very good panels, infact some of the Sammy's high-end TV use Sharp (hope now u dont fret). Ideally, it should not create a problem with HTPC.

Also, consider TV insurance I had posted in the TV thread after the 3 years.

Oh, good then I can switch between the HDMI ports and save the cost of monitor :) Thanks for that informative thread on warranty extension for all of us unlucky people. As of now my marathon of music is on...

Congrats on your new purchase. Enjoy it and do post a review.

I'm really dull in regards to TV review but will give it a shot. My wife and son said that they liked the picture quality of Samsung better. I think I know the reason why? Samsung's colours are more vivid but the human mind likes change, so it commands the eyes to tell it is better as it is different. Sharp is true to the rendition of colours hence I like it.

I think you made the right choice by going for Sharp Aquos, they make excellent displays and price is very reasonable compared to other brands. I've seen Sharp Aquos sell like hot cakes at BestBuy, Dallas.

And you can use the TV as display for your PC and you won't have any issues. I've been using HDTVs for past 10-years as monitor. No issues till date. :)

Congrats on your purchase, Enjoy !!!

I know Sharp is not spoken much on HFV. Sharp does not treat India as a big market. But you are correct in the U.S, Sharp is a name to reckon with. Most of my relatives there have 80" Sharp TV's.

Thank you all for your guidance.

I finally purchased a new LED Sharp Aquos 39 Inch LC-39LE440M. The defective Samsung TV (Rs 5,000) was adjusted in the purchase and the final price I paid was 32k. The Sharp has a 3 year warranty and a panel made in Japan. I hope this time I'm not the unlucky one  and it lasts many years like my vintage audio HiFi.!

I saw LC-39LE440M in a store hanging just next to a Samsung and SONY LEDs. From my observation, it had the most neutral and beautiful picture of the three.

IMHO, Sony as usual had 'high-brightness and high-contrast' picture with 'illuminated whites' (exactly like my WEGA) and ultra-beautiful colors, which seemed extremely unnatural and artificial. Also its price was 10K INR more than SHARP's. Samsung's pic quality was excellent, but I somehow did not like it. SHARP's picture was really good with accurate colors, perfect sharpness and contrast/brightness. It was probably the most natural picture of the three. SHARP's own fabricated Japanese panel really proves its quality. My friend purchased the 29" counterpart of the same series and is extremely happy with its cool set of features and great pic quality for the price he paid.

Can you confirm whether 39LE440M has an 8-bit panel or a 10-bit panel? (Sharp website does not provide this particular information)

Yes, you are bang on in your observations, it has a dead neutral colour picture hence it may not be everyones cups of tea as our eyes what to relish something different as well as extravagant. Sony has always been expensive and if I had a budget, I would have purchased it. Sorry, I have no ides on the whether Sharp uses 8-bit or 10-bit panel.

A confession- My Wife and son are not happy with Sharp and liked Samsung better. :)

Sir,

I was contented with listening to music but was forced to purchase TV as my HiFi rig is connected with it. Nowdays Tv's are not a luxury but a necessity, that another reason my wife made me purchase the idiot box.

1. 50hz- For critical viewing such as Football, I would suggest 100+hz refresh rate but then you need to pay more for that.
PS3- Don't have it, hence can't comment.
2. Video formats- I haven't tried...I will get back to you on this.
3. External speakers- I guess it does not have it, or I don't know how to use it. But it does have surround sound built it.

I cannot comment on its performance for video games. But i observed that the USB port of the 29" model of the LE440M series reads all video formats even from NTFS drives  (most USB ports read only FAT32 USB drives, in which can store only upto 4.4 GB). Which means you can play even a 10 GB file from a thumb drive.
About its jacks, it has both Analog Audio-Out and Headphone port. Also, note that only while playing files from USB, Analog-Audio-Out jack does not work.

It is always the vivid picture that draws everyone's attention. Because people go only by looks and fail to understand the reality behind it. Which is why wonderful models made by Philips, Panasonic and SHARP are never considered by consumers. Just like yours, my family thinks Sony has the best picture quality.

Last but not least, congratulations on the purchase of your Japanese TV :) A review on the same will be helpful for HFV-ians.
