First of all thanks to all the members of this forum especially people who guided me in my purchase. Because of you all, i have gained a decent understanding of HT and been able to finalize my first HT

I have received the delivery and very excited to listen it, but setup will be done on Saturday...

I don't understand any technicalities, so i am hoping the guy who will come for installation will do a good job.
But I need few more suggestions on placement of the overall system and the room.

I have attached files drawing 2 available options for me. Kindly advise which setting will deliver the maximum effect

Your First arrangement seems better, however, don't you think that you need at least one sofa facing the TV? This way at least one set of people enjoy the sound and visuals (both movies and music) from a central position. Not clear if there is a window behind, on the short side, but watch out for any loose glass panes, they can shake on certain occasions! Have a carpenter check the beading. Just touching a glass pane and 'rocking' it gently will tell you if any of them are not fixed 'tightly' enough. Some glaziers putty or better still silicon bead or a neoprene bead/gasket around glass panes does help too.

The second arrangement has the TV too far away from the sitting position. I have felt that with largish, flat panel TVs one is better off at about 8' to 10'.

Had the set been only for sound then it was a different game altogether, but even then a central (listening) position is still important.

Enjoy the sound and the experience..

In the first option window is behind the TV. I will check for loose panes and fix them

I do plan to keep a sofa in the middle. The only issue that i am seeing is that surrond speakers will be just ahead of my sitting position. From whatever i have read on net, speakers should be at the ear level or slightly behind

Suggest whether surronds slightly ahead of my ears (tilited slightly back) will do the job

Ashish

Surrounds just a little ahead of your earline is not the same as having them behind, but seating centrally is more important than the surround location, IMO.

I saw your option 1 once again, why cant you shift the surr. satellites to the rear wall? This way irrespective of where you you keep your sofa (the one facing the system) the sats will be behind your ear-line.

I will definitely explore this option as well....

better option :
than paradigm CT100

- dedicated SUb10K
- good 2FS speakers (14k used) or dIY FS with MarkAudio Alpair10
-rare pair Polk Rti6 (import POLK AUDIO RTi6 ? HIGH PERFORMANCE BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS ? NEW ? BLACK ? PAIR 047192109722 | eBay)
Price 16k

- and yamaha centre used 2K
or warf centre :3.9k (HifiMart)

The discrete system components have better performance , it needs little patience to gather all but results will be huge difference . I can say Night and DAY if you do DIY Alpairs for front floorstanding .. .

So guys ..comments welcome

Is there any 'absolutely budget' set of speakers around 15-20K which matches Denon 1612/1312 for a good movie output? This is for 90% movies and 10% music. I am assuming that such a system would be better than Onkyo 3500

Okay so here's the confusion. I'm a n00b when it comes to hifi. I have been reading this forum for almost 2-3 years now and am planning to get myself a home theatre. I am a movie buff (not much into music but that may change once I have a good system, isn't it?).

I read a lot and thought that entry level Onkyos (3400/3500) should be good for me (I've NEVER listened to good systems at all). But the more I read the more I thought that I should go for a discrete system. The only challenge is the budget. But then if I can spend 30K for 3500 then I might as well get myself a 1312 for around 23 and extend the budget to 35K. But that means that I'll have to get speakers for around 12K max which does not seem enough by a far stretch.

You can get 1312 for 18-19k.The speakers I mentioned is the solution for movies & not best for music. These cubes can come for 25k(not sure).

There is another way,you can add Bookshelf speakers 1st & add rest of speakers step by step.

Finally need to search a used set if available for you budget.

My query is - would such a system be better than Onkyo 3400/3500 - as the speaker configuration in both would almost be similar and Onkyo is considered a tad better when it comes to movies.

Also, what does the wattage on speakers mean - I mean for an AVR it says that it's a 110W system so i am assuming that it'd be pushing out 110W to the 5 speakers, whereas the JBL 140's speakers are rated at 50W max (except SW which is 100W)

Congrats!!
Did you explore an amp vs avr like Denon? I am in a dilemma over amp+fs vs avr+fs.

Where exactly is fairdeal? Is there a landmark near there?

Besto and enjoy

Keno did you read my thread on a new system? Good posts by experts. I'm leaning towards a amp instead of avr

No i didnt explore amp option. I did look at FS, but beacause of space constraints and aesthetics reasons i bought satellites

Fairdeal electronics is in crawford market in ashok plaza. U can contact Imran at 9619222563

Hi,
I will list down few options for you. U can audition and finalize
A. HTIB options
1. Onkyo 3500 (25-26k)
2. Denon 1312xp (28k)
3. JBL cinesystem140 (23-25k)
4. JBL cinesystem (32-35k)
5. Yamaha 296 (30-32k)

B. Avr+ speaker options
1. Denon 1312 (19k) + JBL/Yamaha/
2. Denon 1312 (19k) + Wharfedale 65+moviestar/Boston acoustics (35-40k) - this option will be slightly expensive than 1st option

C. onkyo/denon avr + 2bookshelf/2 floor standers. Add surrounds and subwoofer later

Keep in mind there is always 4-8k extra one has to spend on speaker wires and other cables

If you are too tight on budget then go for either A or C

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!
