Had been having a problem with my Garrard over the past few days -the tonearm would get stuck on the last track of all records and refuse to move forward. Someone recommended a repair shop that could fix all sorts of turntables. An old "uncle" at the shop (who seemed to be of the right vintage) claimed he would fix my TT, no problems at all.
"Uncle" or should i say "chacha" kept the TT for a day, returned it to me today, claiming it had been fixed and recommending that I should replace the stylus as that was one of the causes of the problem. He also improvised something to replace the piece that holds the tonearm in place when the TT isn't playing and charged me a nice sum.
Bring the TT home, hook it up to the amplifier and the same problem - the tonearm kept getting stuck on the last track of all records, though the sound was just fine.
I decided it was time to hit Google and one of the first results of my search led to this link Turntable Forum :: View topic - Garrard SP25 mkII automatic pickup return setting that seemed to have a solution to my problem.
I decided to risk opening the TT, opened up the parts mentioned in the link above, used a few squirts of Philips Contact Cleaner to lubricate a part that seemed clogged. Put things back together and presto, the TT began working just fine, no getting stuck on the last track of records.
Also downloaded the manual for the Garrard from vinylengine.com and found out "Uncle" had goofed in putting back some parts - they were fitted in the wrong manner. Thanks to the detailed manual, I was able to set things right.
Moral of the story - if you're handy with tools and have some idea of what you're doing, sometimes it's better to trust your instincts and do things yourself instead of trusting "Uncles".
