Why do people keep cribbing about flickering while watching 3D? It is bound to happen while watching 3D at home. Does anyone feel differently?:yahoo:

Its not bound to happen........, with active shutter, if there is crosstalk, your eyes will feel the flicking, and crosstalk depends on quite a few factors including the sync between the glasses and the TV. Less the crosstalk less is the flicking ...

In that aspects the passive 3D tech used by LG Cinema 3D, out performs easily, as there is virtually no crosstalk, resulting in a much relaxed 3D image .....

As per my knowledge, Active 3d sets are prone to flickering while the passive ones are free from all this.

I have active 3d plasma tv and flicker is not there and crosstalk is non existent except in very rare cases.

For avoiding flicker i do take some precautions like closing the curtains and switching off all light sources in the room which can lead to flicker.

Flicker was an issue in 2010/2011 Active 3D sets. This year there is hardly any Active 3D set that suffers from flicker.

But what about other effects of the active tech like giving headache.. are they also removed from the current crops of 3D TVs?

^

See the headache thing depends on the individual. There are individuals who can watch Active 3D for hours and not feel any discomfort and those who can't bear Active 3D even for 5 minutes.

Also some people cannot perceive 3D depth while some can perfectly.

So only you can find the answer to that question yourself. Still, on current Active sets an average joe will not get a headache watching a full 3D feature film.

I own a 43E490 for the last three weeks and watched it about 10-15 hours in 3D. My observations are:

1. Flickering, cross talk, head ache etc are depends on the content and the person.

2. In most of the cases, I and some other family members faced no problem, but others members faced problems.

3. Even though there was no headache, I felt eye fatigue after watching 3D for longer duration, say more than 30 minutes. may be because of the reduced brightness.

4. 3D felt very good when viewing in the night with all lights off and sitting about 6-8 ft away.

5. Although I watched only a few items, I found IMAX videos are most pleasant to watch. I can receive the 3D channel HIGH TV on my 8 ft c band dish. some contents on this channel gives headache to me, While others didn't.

6. It is true that the 3D has improved in this year models. Last year I had headache even while watching 3D for a few minutes at the showrooms.

+1 God2007

Also I would add:

6. Watch at night with no nights
7. Or if watching in the day keep a very dark room with your windows darkened

yeah....Just few days back, I was watching Raaz 3 in 3D and i wasn't able to watch it continuously for more than 15 minutes. The same experience was with Don2 as well.
Can we say that glasses provided in the theatres aren't upto mark?

Then I think more than the glasses, it's a problem with you. Maybe you are one of those for whom 3D just won't work. A lot of my friends also cannot view 3D for more than a few minutes. They start getting headache.

Oh,,,,looks like I am not a 3d guy but the same experience was with 3-4 friends of mine, who were watching the movie with me.
The same holds true for them as well?

If it is active 3D, try watching in the night, by turning off all tube / CFL lights and changing seating position. in my experience, seating position also affects 3D experience.
While watching, focus your attention to the center of the TV and ignore the peripheral views. If you tried to focus all over the TV, your eyes need to work hard, leading to head ache.
Also try by increasing the screen brightness. When we put on the 3D glasses, the brightness reduced very much and this causes eye strain. I also feel eye fatigue after prolonged 3D viewing due to the reduced brightness.

I was watching the movie in a theatre so no point adjusting the tube and CFL lights there.
But anyways thanks for your concern and advice.

@Indian11

Yes same holds true for them as well. The only "solution" maybe to try if Passive 3D works for you, but then I guess not as most likely the theater you saw the movie at also uses Passive 3D glasses.

But that means essentially that flicker free 3D works only in certain circumstances or settings? I thought it had more to do with the technology a particular 3D TV is using!

Flickering has significantly reduced in this year's active 3D TV's but its still existent. I have had a demo of he Toshiba passive 3D TV and did not face any flickering issues in that..:ohyeah:

I guess there is nothing to argue about because its been proved by many international electronic associations that active 3d technology posses flicker or crosstalk.
Though one of my friend above said that it depend on individual but still if there something wrong with technology so individual has nothing to do with it, or might be person like you is fortunate enough who never noticed any flicker n all.

Usually people faces flicker in active 3d because of their shutter glass mechanism they open and close subsequently unlike passive 3d glasses.
