Hi Guys. I had a vinyl set up at my place for more than two weeks. To make place i had even sold my Esoteric rig. After two weeks, i am back to my Esoteric rig. Find it way more fun to listen to Esoteric as compared to vinyl. In fact a lot of guys advised me not to get into mid level vinyl rigs saying i will be disappointed after the Esoteric. I did not want to get into a high end vinyl rig. So i got into a mid level one. But it did not cut ice. I am at least happy i gave it a honest shot. So its back to cds for me.

Thats what many people I know are coming to realise. Unless you have excellent components and recordings for Vinyl, it is very cumbersome to go through the maintenance of records. Also it is hard to get to the advertised/stated qualities esp. if you have a decent CD player like Esoteric, and comparable ones.

I am still in the experimenting mode at this time -150 records. Investment is not very high. I might give it about a year more and then make a call.So far it is not upto the level I expected but then I dont have the type of gear which I auditioned and decided to give it a shot.

hi prem,

pretty sure that you will spend north of INR 30 lacs to appreciate the performance of a vinyl rig -

Shucks Prem, At least you got the Esoteric rig you love so much back. What's happening to the Goldenote now?

Does the Esoteric gear sound as effortless and analog as Vinyl? what are its strong points? What model do you own? What model TT and phono failed your test?

Thanks

Hi Marsilians
I never found cleaning records cumbersome atleast not as a kid. However it may be the arrangement - my vinyl rack was a waist height and the TT at shoulder height. There was no bending over and sense of strain. Each Vinyl had its own slot so selection was easy - I would pull out a Vinyl prop it against my belly while I cleaned it and placing it on the TT at shoulder height.

Think time-work-motion analysis and its impact on psychology - and I am beginning to suspect that you folks have placed your rig "suboptimally" in a manner that induces a mental effort and strain maybe subconsciously.

Cleaning the LP was also the time I would gaze at the covers and enjoy the photos and artwork. It was a process that was part of musical enjoyment not a chore to be accomplished before getting down to the actual business of listening to music.

I would encourage anybody planning a vinyl rig to position their rack with these hints about placement and check :)

It was a wall mounted unit my dad had gotten made from a local carpenter.

Cheers

gobble you are very correct. Since I have to hide everything from my daughter, I rarely get to use my stuff. And pressed for time in general.

Suri,

This is quite a wild one. What turntable set up do you have in mind to spend upwards of 30 lacs? There are many of us who have spent a fraction of that 30 lacs and doing well with Vinyl. Some may like and some may not but money spent is not the cue for like-ability of any sound - Vinyl or CD.

Hi Gobble

I had the Bellavista Signature table, the B7 titanium arm, BOBOLI signature cartridge, Dumbo power supply and Golednote Phono 2. It would be regarded as a mid level set up.

Here is a review of the set up.
High Fidelity
IN the review, the cartridge used is a slightly better one.

The Esoteric rig i have is the P70 D70. The current equivalent model of this would be the Esoteric P03 D03. The P03 D03 does SACD while mine does not. The P70 infact uses the same transport mechanism as the current Esoteric top of the line P01.

IMO the Esoteric sounds more efortless and involving than the vinyl rig. The vinyl rig had a slightly more seductive midrange but on almost all other standard hifi attributes like dynamics, treble, bass, soundstage, details, transparency the Esoteric was far superior.

Hi Stevieboy

I really wanted the vinyl rig to work but i guess my ears are now conditioned for the Esoteric sound. I had purchased some 190 mint hindi lps, all classics, and some 50 odd engish lps, many of which were UK or US first presses- Simon Garfunkel, Beatles, Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac. I am feeling pretty miserable that it did not work out. I had really taken a lot of pains to put together my hindi film collection. Each and every lp was meticulously cleaned and transferred to a Mobile Fidelity inner sleeve. My entire collection of lps and my complete Goldenote equipment has been given to a friend of mine. I hope it works out for him. He was infact thrilled about getting 190 mint hindi film lps

Hi Anilva

I agree with you that spending money is not an indication of liking a medium. I have never heard a 30 lakh vinyl rig so i do not know what it can do but at the same time i must add that i would definitely prefer an entry level vinyl rig to an entry level cd player. Its only when you get to a mid level cd player that it starts sounding decent.

Well Prem,

With first presses I can just feel your anguish. Though, feeling miserable might not be a long term pain to bear. As one reviewer said now that Esoteric has its own phonostage (which incidentally was well reviewed) perhaps their own turntable might not be far off. Who knows, it just might have that Esoteric sound you love and your ticket back to the dark side ;)

One never knows what the future might bring... :)

regards

Two things i really liked when the vinyl rig was with me were the Onzow stylus cleaner and the Spin Clean Record Washer. The Spin Clean is an absolutely fantastic product and it costs about $80. There was a marked difference between hand cleaning and cleaning the LP on Spin Clean. I am not talking about visual appearance but about the sound quality. The dynamics, clarity and treble improved.

Hi Stevieboy

I was all ready to place an order for the Esoteric phono stage. I had even worked out a deal. Maybe i will hit vinyl with a vengeance some time later. Who knows?

Hi Anm

Which lps are you referring to? Hindi or English? English were all used since they were first presses but in near mint condition. They were sourced on ebay, audiogon and my contacts on other forums.

Most of the Hindi lps were new. I know the top guys in all music companies so i used them to get most of my Hindi lps. Some were bought used but in spotless condition from collectors. For some i paid much more than market rate. For example a spotless Jawani Diwani cost me Rs 1000.

no I was asking about the hardware. But good to know about your contacts. It would be great to buy new hindi LPs - I would be obliged if you can tell me how.

Hi Anm

The complete vinyl rig was purchased from Jacob at J&B Sound in Mumbai. They are the Indian distributor for Goldenote products.

As far as new hindi vinyl goes, i am sorry i will not be able to help you out. It was a huge favor i had to take from the guys at the music companies. Many of them were directly sourced from the company. I did not even pay for them.
