Thanks to Shafic, got my first turntable last weekend. Pioneer PL 516. As my Norge 2060 does not have a phono input, I got a Pioneer SA 6300 amp too, from him.

Would like to thank Mr. Shafic. The care and love he has for vinyls was very evident in the packing itself. Perfectly packed, shipped on time, excellent communication, and ever willing to help. He even called me twice to check if I received the package and if everything is fine.

Initial impressions: Very good. I am a newbie and with my limited exposure, cannot benchmark this with anything else. It sounds quite nice, and is pleasing to the ears. Wife, who is otherwise allergic to my music adventures, surprisingly has good words for music from vinyls, says its just like those olden days. So no lecture on financial imprudence :)

Now starts the hunt for good LPs, especially Malayalam. I guess those are rare to find these days

Two pics of my humble setup below:

Hi BGeorge,

Welcome to the world of Vinyl, :clapping:

I have the PL 512, which is a fully manual version of the 516. I have found it to be a very good TT, would suggest that you go through the vinyl threads on this forum in detail and then experiment with the placement of the TT, your enjoyment will go up manifold. I learned everything from this forum, it is extremely informative with loads of people willing to help out. If you look hard enough I am sure you will find most of the records that you want at sane prices (always important).

Regards

Congratulations on this and welcome to the vinyl club. TT looks great and yes try placing the TT a bit away from the speakers.

Looks like the TT is currently placed on a glass table top with all 4 legs sitting on the glass. On first sight it did look like it was placed on a speaker with 2 of its legs hanging out :)

Thanks a lot everyone, for the wishes and suggestions.

@Record Player,
Yes, it is a solid wood pedestal with glass top. All legs are sitting on the glass top, though a little squeezed.

I will move the TT away from speakers as suggested.

Congrats and welcome to an exclusive but ever-growing club of enthusiasts. Yes, as pointed out, the positioning needs a re-think. Put the TT beside the amp on the cupboard, and drop the speakers on to small stools, place them on either side of the cupboard. This is the best thing you can do for a start. Ideally, the speakers should be away from the turntable by atleast 4-5 feet. The TT itself looks good, Pioneer did build some great turntables back in the day.

Yes, the sight of a turntable in action and the sound coming from the speakers (with the ticks and pops) usually gets people hooked. Interestingly, my wife saw a turntable for the very first time when she visited our house to meet my parents (before we got married) and was hooked instantly. I still remember, Julio Iglesias' 1100 Bel Air Place was playing at the time.

Same in my case too Reuben.
However, unfortunately, my wife used to find it interesting when we were not married, but since after, she terms all my vinyl related purchases to be wastage of money:lol:

Shaadi ke side effects?

The best way to further any hobby is to get one's near and dear onboard. I have managed to succeed on this front. Even both sons love listening to vinyl. My 2 1/2 year old box demands I play records as he likes to sit and admire the TT in action :)

True! And this one coming from an experienced man!
To be fair, I have succeeded upto some extent too. 2 things are important:

1. The vinyl pressing should be very good- so that I can defend my purchases saying that "look, this sounds so lively and good against the CDs, MP3s & the ipod you hear". At times, she agrees.

2. If the music is upto her taste, it makes the job of buying that record easier.

Rest will come with experience & time!
