hi there. im brand new to the forum so i guess ill start with what i have and lead into why im here.

its a simple AB system featuring an older kenwood KR-KV6060 reciever with 2 polk monitor 50 towers.

the speakers sounded fantastic when i got them 7 years ago but now the playback is starting to kind of "wave" in and out...kind of a weird way to put it i guess, but its the best i can describe it. the sound will just go from quiet to loud intermitently.

im not sure if it is being caused by the speakers or the reciever. i measured the impedence of the polks and it came up as 3.5 ohms. now i looked the specs for these speakers up and it says they are 8 ohm speakers (along with most home stereo speakers, ive read).

in conclusion the reason for the post is that im hoping for some feedback from anyone who can give me advice on if i need to buy new speakers or a new reciever.

thanks
sean

first you need to identify whether it is the amp or speakers causing this. You need to run the amp with a different set of speakers to identify the problem.

Remove the speaker grille and check the speakers too. Polk used foam surrounds on their speakers . These could have rotted and cracked or fallen away ! You can have them repaired if it is so. Alternately just go and buy a new generation speaker after doing some research on the Net. Not all new models or brands are good but some are supposedly exceptional value for money.
I've heard many Polks and there are much better speakers than that. Walk into a hi-fi store or look up speaker reviews on the Net if you want to change. You do need to do some homework on the Net before buying anything new ....or even repairing your speakers !

How did you measure the impedance of the speakers? Unlike resistance, it cannot be measured using normal DMM. Also, it varies with frequency.
