I glance at The Register every day to get an update on recent techie news. Today I learn that

There are some wonderful pictures of unbelievable precursors to the tape that we all know today! I never knew that the precursor to it was steel tape.

By comparison, it's rather boring, concentrating on the use of tape for data storage (ok ok, some people will be fascinated ) but there is a promise to return to "entertainment" in part three, which I'll post if I don't miss it.
