HD/full HD doubt

Hi friends,

I am bit confused. Whats this TV tuner and HD ready TV?

TV Tuner = the part of your TV that help you to tune to differnent channels. The tuner tunes and saves the channel list on your TV, which is changed the remote.
If you are using a set top box, the tuning is done by the set top box, no tuning is done by the TV. It only displays the signal recieved through the RCA or HDMI connections.

If you are watching cable, the TV tuner is used.

HD Ready - Read other posts in this forum.

In the HDTVs the tuners are a useless appendage ( in India). No terrestrial digital or HD broadcast available in India. But on DTH and C band Satellites, HD channels are available in 1080i format. To enjoy it in its full clarity you require a full HD TV. So is the case if you are planning to buy Blue ray players or download 1080p / 1080i contents from the internet. So if you are planning to buy a TV of more than 42 inch, full HD TV is the way to go. Otherwise a full HD TV is a waste of money.
My question is, when the tuner is only differentiating thing between HD and HD ready TV and we are NOT going to use the tuner at all, than why should we go for a full HD TV and what shall prevent us from enjoying a picture to it's fullest when viewed from a HD set top box, media player or Blue Ray player

The terms HD and HD Ready are used interchangedly. ( Not full HD). Some sets do come without the tuner, but the same TV / model with tuner and without tuner options are not available, IMO. So you just compare the sets for price, pic quality etc and need not bothered about the presence or absence of the tuner. In the early days the plasmas are available as Plasma Display Panels, where the TV tuner was an external attachment. Now such things are not available.

If you are too sure that you need not required a tuner, then buy a computer monitor with DVI or HDMI and connect the set top box to it and audio to an audio system. This is very cheap as monitors attract 4% VAT while TVs attract 12% VAT.(at least in Kerala). But the problem is that large size monitors are rare. I have connected an HD FTA receiver to my 22 inch LED monitor converting it as a personal TV.

^^ Sorry for going OT. How many HD channels are there in your FTA receiver?

That depends upon how many satellites you are hooked to. I can hook up 8 satellites using the diseqc swtich, but now only 5 connected on two dishes:

Now I can get:

M Tunes ( Hindi)
LUXE TV
NHK HD
Fashion TV HD - Low signal strength hence occasionally.
TRACE Urban - Low signal
Trace sports - Low signal
Thai PBS Language - Thai
Angel TV (Tamil) now moved to another sat
Bigfoot TV (3D)
Fashion one
Life inspired
RTV Malaysia

All these are FTA channels and hence the quality of content is not great except LUXE TV and NHK.

Full channel listings are available at (both pay and FTA):
