Hi,

i just bought a panasonic 50VT20. plugged in a pen-drive y'day to test a BDrip of a movie, but to my surprise, the TV didnt recognise it, although in the showroom i had tested it on sony EX720 and panasonic ST30, and both had played it flawlessly. so now am thinking of getting an HD media player.

but the doubt is, i already have a PS3 (jailbroken, hence 'showtime' can be played). even then, would buying an HD media player be a wise decision ?
i dont have much knowledge about HD media players (though a certain person called 'Google' can help me, but what better than our forum dearies assisting us :ohyeah: ). budget is around 5k. torrent-support will be icing on the cake, but not a necessity, as i already have a very efficient PC to handle that ;)

kindly suggest some models, and then the better of the lot. am open to buying online (and what better than flipkart), and i want a brand new one, so not interested in used one. any specific functions that i need to consider before i decide for one ?

please advise :)

You can purchase the Asus O! Play mini at around Rs.3800 odd with shipping from deltapage.com site. I presume that is the cheapest option and within your budget. Plays all formats and small in size. You can check the thread based on this player and decide.

thanks.

thank you ! even i have this player as my first priority in my list.

UPDATE - just read about amkette's flash tv hd....very good reviews, and similar pricing. now what ?!

From my experience there is no value-add on additional media player when you have a PS3.
My suggestion is not to waste money on media player

I have a PS3 too and a separate media player (I bought the PS3 later since it was for primarily BD playback and gaming). PS3 cannot playback NTFS drives. PS3 does not support all media formats. Many WMVs, avi etc are not playable. If you want to play over wifi / network PS3 is Wireless-G and hence slightly larger files may get stuck in netween while playback if network power is not strong. 4+GB files are not playable over network (shows up as unsupported media). If you want to overcome these limitations get a dedicated media player.

thanks, svkndv & haisaikat ! i've decided to analyse my options a bit more, and hence would consider buying a player next month. after browsing through various forums, i saw there are quite a no. of options that have overwhelmed me, and hence i decided not to rush things, but evaluate on aspects pertaining to my requirements for each option and then see. for now, am decided on few things that i want and few that i am not interested in, like for eg, 3D content playability is a must-have for me, but am really not interested in streaming playback/networking capabilities.

@ haisaikat - i feel you dont have a jailbroken PS3. i guess with 'showtime' on a jailbroken PS3, you can run quite a no. of formats; but for this month, i will just research further on various media players, as well use this time for experimenting with 'showtime', but i wont like to use PS3/showtime as the sole player, due to issues like console-life, etc being 'supposedly' affected by it.

for now, in my mind i have the HiMedia 900D, which's got a good chipset + 3D content playability + not VERY costly. HiMedia has got good feedback from some of our HFV members here. i have also come to know that there might be some firmware revisions/hardware modifications to this model by the end of this month, that might improve its functions. apart from that, i am also hoping AC Ryan, etc to come up with some 3D player in the meantime. if not, then HiMedia it is for me next month !

All bedia players play certain 3D formats like SBS and Top bottom.
Almost none plays frame sequential.

FYI. The 3.8k asus player and 5k WDTV both play 3D SBS and Top bottom. They are actually same as normal formats.

yeah i just checked on iboum....no frame sequential. sorry i dont know much about how 3D playing works, but would that mean that i wont notice any difference in a 3D movie on my TV played on an AC Ryan PlayOn HD, as compared to when played on HiMedia HD900D ?

Not so much at this time , but I am sure the future firmwares will have that update too. If you want to save more money get a wdtv for 110$ from U.S.

Off topic (Sorry)
WD TV Live hub comes with hdmi 1.4 , can it play the 3d formats? Also can it detect a 2 tb external hard drive?

one of the prime reasons for putting a pause to my move of purchasing a player this month is also to extend my budget, so wont retract now ;)

BTW, i read we're gonna have a new sigma chipset probably by this year's end or by 2012 beginning....will have dual core processors (1200 MHz). any info regarding this ? i was thinking of pre-ordering the 900D in a few days' time :o

regarding WD tv live hub, just saw WD's forum and users are not very hopeful about firmware upgrades of WD addressing 3D issue.

UPDATE : Damn ! just talked to raghu. he says 900D is slated to be released by next month, but still he thinks it will take longer than that (also, 900B is out of stock).

^^ Consider an HTPC also. It is much better than media players any day. I am upgrading to HTPC soon.

sorry baiju, cant spare that much money.

@ blasto - yeah i saw that, but reading your post about your discontent with X6 and your info on the X9 (which though isnt there on measy's webpage), i didnt think much of it.
