HD Projector Selection for Home

Most of the installation now-a-days are digital installations. That's what the elite club like celebrities have at home too. Its 2k (2046x1080 resolution), 3 chip DLP system. At home we have 1920x1080 resolution projectors. But the similarities end here. The 2k cinema system has the DCI specs, which specifies higher lumens, very high quality lens and MTS system and Higher color gamut. This high color gamut makes a huge difference, coupled with lumens.

Some people have modified the DCI projectors input boards to take in HDMI/DVI inputs. They have also modified the lenses so they work with shorter throws like 15 ft or so and lamp module is tweaked for smaller light output. The DCI projectors are also very big, noisy and generate lots of heat. That requires its own projection room, insulated and with dedicated AC vents.

Currently though, the 1080p projectors do have the same resolution as 2k and gets us quite there with very less cost, albeit at small screens.

I was in a high end HT installers place in ST Louis recently, and saw some of their high end B & W speakers, as well as their new 4K projector, paired with Integra AVRs. The new Runco projectors, which they rated very highly, were to be installed a week later priced at $4-5000.

All pretty high priced gear-they talked of $20-30K at the entry level, and going up to 40-50K. My bro in law is a physician there and knows nuts about these things, he is setting up a HT room, so I was his consultant!

Why I preferred TW8000 on TW6000!!! AAh great question to answer...

Even had the fact that it was nearly impossible for me to stretch my budget beyond 1.2 lac, answer comes from lot of factors.

After analyzing thoroughly, Tw8000 differs lot than the TW6000. They are altogether of different class. Many of us will be surprised if I say tw8000 is the double the quality/feature/value of that to its lil brother tw6000.

Justification : [I can write 10 pages on each of below points but summarizing]

1. Contrast Ratio : tw8000 has 2lac:1 contrast ratio, can be differentiated significantly when both run movies in dynamic mode. This takes a whooping picture quality out of tw8000
PS: contrast ratio can be increased if you use powerDVD12 features on tw6000, but believe me nothing comes nearby to picture quality of 8000. PowerDvd or any other video post-processing video player on tw8000---simply Jaws Down!! :yahoo:

2. Super Resolution : Picture becomes ultra sharper. 1080p feels like 4k one. Liked this feature from bottom of my heart.:licklips:

3. Frame Interpolation : Previously I used to ignore this feature. But I have to lose bet to one of my friend and have to agree that it makes the move viewing experience lot more blessed with quality. Till then I have never turned this feature off from my pj.

4. Extra 200 lumens : Many of my you might be thinking, brightness of 2200 of tw6000 and 2400 of tw8000, cannot be differentiated with normal eyes. But guys we are missing point here this is max lumens output measured in standard conditions. Short but sweet answer : in cinema mode, brightness of tw8000 = 1.5 * brightness of tw6000, dont ask how but its the fact.
benifit : you will happily watch tw8000 with even in day light with only curtains down :clapping:

5. High Quality Lense : this is the unadvertised feature of tw8000. Believe me Lense has significant effect on each group of pixels coming out of you pj.

6. 2D to 3D conversion : None of the software player can do 10% to what ability of tw8000 has. million thanks to panny group for developing multimax 3d tech.
sorry but have to say this...watching some xxx movies converted to 3D, unexplained experience.

7. lastly lense shift : I could be worried if i place my pj in between middle of my room, but i have been saved by tw8000 thank god.. now i have attached it in one corner of my room, due to high zoom - 47% vertical lense shift - 97% horizontal lense shift.

So I would suggest you guyz only one thing.. if you are buying tw6000, please hold on for second, note down all of above points, validate everything what you wan in your projector, budget problem, take loan from bank but buy tw8000 only.

As a big video enthusiastic person i have said above line but decisions will yours in the end.

A. tw6000 great projector - certainly value for money, great for day to day viewing, you are not videophile take this at home. you will be happy for saving money.

B. tw8000 best feature packed projector - if you are videophile, interested watch every pixel of every movie, hate blurry movies, with ultra clarity, want high contrast cinema hall like effects, take this at home I guarantee you will definitely not regret your choice.

Sorry to side step. Just a curious noob question when it comes to projector.

what kind of projectors do the cinema halls use? I was wondering just like people have Gramaphones - is it possible to get an old used projector from single screen cinemas and have it at home. I know it takes up a lot of space and the spools themselves are bulky. and not sure if the screen needs to be 200 feet away for projection. Just wondering - will be a good novelty to have even if we only have one film movie spool to show off -

Usually 3-chip DLPs.

Hi prashant,
Thanks a lot for your inputs. But was just curious for 3d gaming and essentially movies usage thati am looking for, ive been pushed for the 6000 by most demo guys. Wanted to know what what made u choose 8000? I am also looking to setup my HT. my room dimensions are 22' x 10.5'... And I'm pretty confused by the choices. My budget was 1lac but is stretchable... The major diff that I was told was the 2d to 3d conversion that the 8000 offers. Also if u could share if u got the 3d glasses along with the system. Would really appreciate your help,

Thanks,

Sid

Please read butone previous post, I did got one 3D goggle. not pair

Just one word - WOW :clapping:

What is ur viewing distance? also can u elaborate on ur HT set up? AVR? any pics?

One more point in TW8000's favor is its price in India... The difference in the general selling price of a 3010 & a 5010 in US is about $1300... Still many reccommend the 5010 over the 3010... But in India the diff in price is about 30k or so(less than $600)... For me buying a TW8000 over TW6000 is a no brainer in India...
