HDD prices appear to be gradually falling

I recently bought a 1.5TB Western Digital Green from eBay India for Rs.5,140/- with 5 years warranty.

It was 6050 + 90 (shipping) less Rs.1,000/- discount for Citibank card. :)

Yet to install it though.

Edit: It is WD15EARS (64 MB Cache)

Yeah.. and quality too..

5 of the hdd's I bought after 2006 died within 2 years.

3 of my hdd's before 2001 are still alive after 10x more power spikes and surges and falls.
And those had 1 year warranty..

I'd rather get solid state than all the present day trash cheap hdd and lose 20% of my data every 3 years. I've lost so much important data from the main as well as backup hdd's failing in less than 2 years from just being inside a pc without any movement. I hate present day hdd tech.

I doubt the data reliability of HDD so I prefer to take all my backups on DVDs and even make two copies of it. I think chances of loosing data in HDD is more than DVDs (2 copies).

HDD has lots of moving parts and electronics and chances of its failure is always there but in Optical Format we have no fear of electronics and moving parts.

Yes,

EXACTLY my experience too !

The Seagate Drives are PARTICULRLY Bad. Infact, I have vowed NEVER to buy Seagate. The N Years replacement warranty, does not even begin to address the PAIN of lost data, and reinstalling the OS, all aps and user prefs.

I have recently (about 6 months ago) switched to Western Digital HDDs and was happy, untill a few days ago the WD HDD ( 1 TB) developed a bad SATA connecter / intermittent contact ( No it was NOT the SATA Cable, but the connector on the drive. Over 1 week, became Progressively unreliable till it refused to boot up the comp, even after repeated attempts. Luckily it gave me the opp to back up the drive while it was irratic.

SSD (Solid State Drive) has its own share of issues. I would wait little longer for that technology to mature.

Also dont forget that Seagate & WD take 7 days to replace a defective drive. What do you do in office for 7 days ? ???

Everyone ends up buying a new HDD, and keeping the replacement as an extra.

So the replacement is not really worth much,:mad::mad:not to mention the PAIN of re-setting up the system.

Kepp Away from SEAGATE guys. You could loose ALL yr digital Videos & music... I know, I DID

of the hdd which failed

2 seagate
2 maxtor
1 wdd

I am told that Maxtor is just another Brand of Seagate (atleast In India).

Maxtor and Seagate are both supported by the same sales and warranty support agencies.

If that is true, then :

SEAGATE = MAXTOR

and your failure experiences too are identical :D

Guys I'm feeling myself lucky after going through this thread as I'm in computing since 1995 used more then fifty drives for myself n for PCs assembled by me for nears and dears only one of drive gone dead early in 2001 among these one more thing I never ever used seagate HDDs after that.

I have never had any hard drive fail on me in 10 years. The problems with the hard disks occur because of two reasons:

1. There is so much fake stuff in the market that it's really difficult to figure out which one is genuine. There was a case recently where a few hundred fake Intel Core i7 processors came in the market, that too from a reputed vendor like Newegg. If those kind of vendors can be fooled and that too with the processors, think what can be done with hard disks.

2. The second biggest reason for failure is heat. We typically use cheap cases where there is no adequate cooling and the hard disks are stacked on top of each other (if using more than one). The heat sometimes literally melts the components or destroys the magnetic coating on the platters.

For these reasons, I never go to SP Road. Their prices are a little cheaper but I just don't trust them.

I am a computer user for 18 years. I have only seen 2 HDDs dying on me. One Seagate and one Samsung. Lucky me? Could be.

Possibly with the falling rate the quality is going down too. But I also feel steadying the HDD inside your box and ventilating it properly can go a long way in prolonging its life. In a nutshell handle it with extreme care. Even a minor shock (Not necessarily by you, may be by the dealer, the shipper, the courier guys, basically anyone in the chain between you and the production line) can cause a HDD to reduce it's life a great deal.

ranjeet to put it in perspective, my 10 year old 80gb hdd from seagate had 1yr warranty and has gone through atleast 500 power spikes, 100 hard hits from case changes over the years, constant plugging and unpluging. within these 10 years, each and every other hdd I bought died within say 10 spikes, 2 hits, 10 plug and unplugging.

Why has the 80gb taken so much abuse? because it's never failed me. So I keep using it.
But I fear getting any new hdd due to this pathetic quality that will die in my hands in less than 1 year like all other hdd's post 2003 I've bought.

I'd rather buy 40gb ssd than spend thousands on 1-2tb.

I think this is just goign the floppy disk way.
Earlier in 90s, I remember those small disks 3.25" one being pretty reliable, but also expensive.

By the time it was 2000, the cost had gone down and so was the quality. Disk purchased yesterday would fail today.
I had to make so many rounds to get my project report printed :p

PPL thinking solid state drives are better - just wait till you get a bad sector.
