Hi guys,

Have been reading a quite a Lot in here and gathering information on quite many things related to sound.

I have been listening to my Altec lansing 2.1 for past half a decade and i think its time to move on to something better. I have read quite a lot and have found and agree that its better to assemble something on your own rather than pre built systems. but i have absolutly no idea about which AVR to go and which speakers to go and also i would rather start with 2.1 now and scale it slowly to 5.1 or even 7.1 and further upgrade the speakers later than being stuck to same HT for the rest of my life. i love to use things to the utmost level before deciding to change and hence altec lansing for more than 5 years now.

Can someone please suggest me few models to go and audition before i make a purchase as i dont want to sound dumb to sales man whereby he can just stick me anything which sound good in his near perfect setup and makes me cry later.

i have a somewhat OK'ish budget at the moment for 2.1 if not luxurious. i am looking at something around 40k to start with. but i am also willing to wait a lil more even if i have to strech my budget a lil bit if it would mean that i could buy something now and not regret later. and that is the only reason i plan to start with 2.1 and add center and satellite later.

also i would love to have a system which if possible be THX certified and can handle HD sound and give me near Theater like quality, but again my main usage will be Music. space is at premium but i dont think there will be much of an issue if i have to wall hang a speaker containing 6.5 mid driver as long as it sound the way i want/like :)

can someone please suggest good AVR's and front speakers and sub.

also if someone can just update me briefly about front speakers and bookshelf speaker.

will it be too much to ask for ?

Dont over do the music setup,

PLay from lappy or a AINOL tab via dac.
A stereo amp and used BS or some good BS like kef will do.
For amp DIY of SSA is recommended/tripath kit ones.

good HT is expensive ,for music you not need to go 2.1 to 7.1;)
there is no use.

Most well matched stereo setups will sound way better than 2.1 you have

As I said good HT is expensive, you need to do research and collect discretes over time.

Most newbies will do common mistake,

will pick a fancy looking AVR with big brand name ,and some package 5.1.
end result :disaster

+1 to above..
for music set up.
a int amp,a pair of bookshelves is really good.no need of avr
get sonodyne cia amp....
get a pair of sonodyne/wharfedale..

+2 to that.

All you need is a simple integrated amplifier and a good pair of bookshelvs. Connect this to your computer using a good sound card and you should have good music flowing out....

For amplifiers, you could look at Norge, Marantz, CA, etc and for speakers you could look at bookshelves from Norge, Sonodyne, Wharfedale, Tannoy, PSB etc

Best,
APK

better , start with single power amp and a matching buffer pre instead of going by integrated

i will not push for Norge ..after looking the internals .
Good make tripath and TANNOY used pair may be a very good combo

first of all let me thank everyone.. its much appreciated... i have started doing my homework and have some bit of idea about some speakers. however i havent got a change to listen much.

i am currently traveling and this weekend will be in Dubai and the next will be in BKK. i am planning to purchase only the bookshelf for now and will rope in an Amp from india itself. i am little short of funds at the time but i am not gonna make a heist decision on buying.

i heard some good reviews of Jamo c 803 which are available for little over 50k in BKK but will check on Dubai and if the difference is not much will procure them from Dubai only. i am so very interested for low end bass that i am very sure to pick up a powered sub lets see what my pocket says after i have selected bookshelf. i dont like air moving bass or for the matter on my face like we get in disc. i want something which humms in the back ground and feel soft not something which overtakes the stage. i hope i am making some sense here..

some one also suggested Dynaaudio excite X12 as well i havnt read much about it though but if it will be available will audition then this weekend.

Regarding Tannoy, any suggestion which model of bookshelf should i look at.

also considering my budget i might be spending it all on bookshelf and not on sub so for coming few month i want to enjoy the bookshelf with good bass.

Rohit.
