Help in buying a TT and Phono stage

Someone in Chennai has a Dual TT for sale for 4k. You need to buy the cartridge though.

Well Captain, which model is that? I am a long time Dual owner, and not all Duals are equal. Some earlier ones had super light arms and generally thin bass (not sure how are these related). They are perhaps not the better ones. The one I got (CS 5000) also has a light arm (compared with most modern arms) but not that light. In addition, it has the unique feature of having a quartz lock for proper speed. As far as I know, generally the better Duals are made after 1985. I got mine new in 1989.

Regards.

Captain,
The 1229 is a good one. There is also a model 1229Q. These are made in the mid-70s I guess. Some maintenance is required for these, as far as I know. If you can get hold of an used Shure V15 cartridge (no longer made, God knows why), go for it. Even a M97xe (less than, around 5K) would be nice with these, I guess. BTW, there are several types of V15. Find out from a reliable source which type is the best suited.

Regards.

Captain,
The 1229 is a good one.

Thank you very much for your suggestion Asit. Actually, I'm getting a Dual 1224 as a gift from someone in good working condition.:yahoo: (Want to buildup the suspense; so more of it later:D) Hence dropped the plan to pick up the 1229.

Captain,
As far as I know (please check) the 1224 is meant to work with ceramic or crystal cartridges only. It has a 2-pole motor and if magnetic cartridges are used, some noise is inevitable from the 2-pole motor. One needs a 4-pole motor for using magnetic cartridges. The 1225 has a 4-pole motor, otherwise it is the same as the 1224. Please find out the details about these from technically inclined and knowledgeable people. Find out what sort of cartridge the 1224 is coming with.

Regards.

Hi Rajiv,
I've been quite smitten by the 1229 from what I've been reading. Is this TT with someone you know? Any idea about the condition?

Thanks!

...BTW Just got myself a Lenco L75 and trying to fit in a Linn Akito arm with a nagaoka M30 cart...with a new plinth also in the works. the currrent Phono is a big bottleneck so plan to go for Viren Phono myself..

I would be very much interested in following your Lenco build. Best of luck to you!

Of all the V15's, the V15 mark III is considered to be a legend. I had the make III, mark IV and mark V. and even by my own humble assessments, the mark III stands tallest.

The newer Shure M97XE's are kinda similar in tone... but a tad shy of the mark III's glory.

Hi Richie,

Yes, the TT is with someone I know.

It is in very good condition mechanically .

I'm back...Happy New Year everyone!!

Just checked on the TT that I have lying at my parents place...it's a Technics SL5. DO you guys have any experience with that?

I also wanted to check between the CA 640p Phono Stage and the NAD Phono stage which one in your experience will sound better with my set up?

Dear UKJayraj,
the Lyrita Phonostage is a tubed one. It is one of the BEST phonostages that i have heard in a long long time. it is handcrafted and from what i heard of it in a 2 hour listening session, this easily rivals the international tubed phono stages at upto 3-5 times its MRP.

Hi Malvai,

Where did you hear Viren's phono? Just curious to know who got it in Mumbai or perhaps you dropped into his place at Delhi?

Yup it's one hell of a phonostage and once you've got the tubes to play around it's heaven! :licklips: I heard his solid state version and it pretty much blew me away inspite of my liking for tubes. Superb option for the price he used to offer it for. Even the tube one's superbly priced like he usually does.

Regards

Hi, I recently inherited a HMV Calypso, however I am not sure if its working or not as I am scared to turn it on , can any one help me with a contact in Bangalore who can assist in checking and if any problem get it repaired too.

WoW!!

Is it the calypso with the plastic tonearm (later model) or with a metal tonearm (the older model)? The calypso is a stand alone record player without inbuilt amplification. As a kid, I used to sit and admire it for hours as it played records at home. This was during the very early 1970s.

Its a very simple record player with a motor, idler and pickup arm. Run a simple check on the AC mains chord, for exposure or breaks, if that's ok, you can bravely turn it on. Keep a electric tester in hand, after plugging it in, check for live chassis (highly unlikely to have live chassis) and if all's well, you are up and running. The idlers of these calypsos were of very low quality and would harden and crack if not in use. So if the platter does not turn, and if the motor has not ceased over time, then its the idler :)

here's the version with the plastic tonearm:

here's the version with the metal tonearm:
