Help Needed in Connecting Philips HTS 5530 with my Samsung LED TV

Ok I'm getting the Phillips HTS 5530 exchanged for some thing better. I am willing to spend upto 30k. What options do I have.

Best options are the AVRs, and there are multiple threads with suggestions all over our forum for budget AVRs/HTiBs. (Onkyo / Yamaha / Pioneer all have options at the 20K-25 price range, and are available at Reliance Digital).

Another option that could be considered in case you are looking at budget HTiBs with comparatively lower power consumption is the LG BH7220. This one has 2 HDMI inputs, ARC on HDMI out, Optical in, 3D Blu Ray playback, etc. Presume your TV has HDMI inputs (or atleast a DVI one). Output from PS3 can be through HDMI (with the other HDMI input port kept free to connect something else in future). Had just bought it last week and have another thread on it open currently in case you would like to check further details. I think the price in Reliance Digital is Rs. 20990 (MRP is 24990) during this Diwali period, with offer of 2 free 3D Blu Ray disks. Can be found little cheaper in some other dealerships, but Reliance also gives some cash backs later during this period, I guess.

All the best and let us know what you finally decided on.

So Onkyo HTS 3400 is priced at 27k in reliance digital and the denon 1312 is in similar price range. Does the Onkyo having a passive sub a major point for being a deal killer as compared to either the Denon or Yamaha HTIB's.

If you are satisfied with the performance of the passive sub, then go for onkyo 3400. avrs with subwoofer pre-out are useful if you want to upgrade the sub later. This does not mean onkyo subwoofer can't be replaced. Most subwoofers can take speaker level inputs also and you can use such subs with Onkyo 3400.

Ok I sound checked the Yamaha 196 along with the Onkyo 3400. Both have their pro's and con's. I some how liked the sound of the Yamaha more than the Onkyo.

My only gripe is the Yamaha (this model) does not do HD audio. You will be looking to upgrade again if and when you add a Blu-ray player and start buying Blu-ray discs or even renting them from a local library.

Always better to buy something that is "future safe" i.e. has multiple HDMI inputs and handles HD Audio.

Since you are on a tight budget, I sugget that you do a reality and upgrade check:

- think at least 5 years for HT
- what other equipment are you likely to buy in the next 5 years?
- how will they all integrate togther?
- what connectivity will be needed, inputs, outputs, etc.
- after 5 years, will you continue with your HT or junk it away?

Once all questions are properly asked and properly answered, your options will be clear. On a final note, I will say one thing. Do not buy something as a compromise because you are on a limited budget. If budget is constraint, save and buy later. The world is not ending tomorrow. :)

However, all said and done, Yamaha YHT-196 is a decent choice. It has 3 HDMI-in, 2 optical-in, 2 coaxial-in, 2 analogue audio-in, and 1 HDMI-out (with ARC :)). It is not 7.1 but you don't need 7.1. Go for it if you liked the sound of it. It may easily fulfill you for 5 years at least.

@baijuxavior: I was trying to get a heads up on the other threads where people have purchased the Yamaha 196 and have shared their exp about the system. So do not mind if I sound like a noob but what are the negatives of the Yamaha not supporting HD Audio.

@just4kix: I returned the Philips HTS 5530 and got a credit note back for the same amount. So I have a limited window to to pick a home theater of my choice. I just checked and currently they are awaiting arrival of new stocks. So either I wait or I take the Yamaha 196. They don't have the Onkyo 3400 in stock. They tried 2 push the demo piece on me :|

Pls take a look at 296 or better still 298, both fit in your budget of 30k. 298 has the latest amp RX-V373, which has excellent sound quality and would last for all your future requirements, it has four HDMIs In and five AV in. best sound quality in its price range.

get 196 and enjoy...not decodeing hd audio wont be a problem i think......when you add a blu ray player the blu ray player will itself decode the hd audio and send the decoded stuff into yamaha 196........so not a problem.you will just miss the logo, wont miss the sound....

@Prosenjit: Whats the negative of the Yamaha 196 not decoding HD audio. I intend to run all video and audio files via the USB port in the TV. I have Dish HD STB which has a optical S/PDIF out. Don't know if the same carries dolby digital. I don't have a DVD/Bluray stand alone player though.

So optical out connects the TV to AVR, Dish HD connects via HDMI to the TV and PS3 via HDMI to the TV. So with this setup i would get to hear 5.1 surround while running the TV normally, watching movies and listening to music should not be a problem. What happens to the Dish HD STB?

Not sure whether you will get that effect. I recently read on another forum that digital signals sent from TV to AVR do not have 5.1 info. It is just 2 channel info even though it is in digital format. However, Yamaha will have multiple optical/coax inputs. So you can connnect your STB's coax or optical directly to Yamaha for audio while HDMI from STB is connected to TV. I do not know if PS3 has coax/optical out.

HD audio support matters only if you are using a blu-ray player to play blu-ray disks. HD audio is in two main formats - DTS HDMA and Dolby TruHD and they are available in blu-rays only. HD STBs use Dolby Digital and this the yamaha avr will handle. As jaudere pointed out above, TV's optical out may downmix the 5.1 audio to 2 channel so you won't get real 5.1. So connect the STB/PS3 digital audio out (optical/coaxial) to the AVR to get true surround sound.

That is correct. No point carrying about HD audio if bd is not the source.
