HFV Pune meet

It's easier to believe that Santy was faking A/B switching  (sorry Santy, just kidding)

We believed initially that Santy had connected one speaker to output of TEAC UD-H01 & other to CDp/DAC. We even shouted at him for such a odd connection, but realized we misunderstood what he was actually saying by Left / Right.

DEMO NO.23

SOURCE: TEAC UD-HO1 (COST: 25.5K) / AUDIO GD-19 + MARANTZ (USED AS TRANSPORT)
AMP: EMOTIVA USP-1 PRE + ROTEL RB-06 MONO BLOCK POWER AMPS
SPEAKERS: PROAC 140
CABLES: WSS ICS + AUDIOQUEST OPTICAL + SOMMER SPEAKER CABLES

OBSERVATIONS:
AUDIO GD-19 INDUCED MORE SIZZLE & PUNCH TO THE MUSIC, WHILST THE TEAC UD-H01 PROVIDED MORE OF A NEUTRAL PRESENTATION. NEEDLESS TO SAY THE AUDIENCE LIKED THE AUDIO GD-19S PERFORMANCE MORE.

MY VIEW: BOTH ARE GOOD DACS, DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, MY NOD FOR THE TEAC AS I DO NOT LIKE ADDED TADKA ;)
BY NOW THE AUDIENCE HAD THINNED OUT QUITE A BIT ALONG WITH THE GEARS LEFT, SO WE DECIDED TO BRING BACK THE STUFF WE THOUGHT WE SHOULD GIVE ANOTHER SHOT. WE STARTED WITH THE PIONEER SP BS41LR SPEAKERS, FOLLOWED BY HARI IYERS KRYPTON AUDIO K-100 B TL(KEVLAR CONED) SPEAKERS, RESULTING IN DEMO NOS.24 & 25

I found the "un-broken" Teac to be just a wee bit less across usual sonic criteria (e.g dynamics /clarity etc), compared to "well-broken" DAC-19. However this "wee bit" is so less that in "single" blind test I wouldn't have been able to tell which one was playing. After break-in, I suppose Teac may even do better.

Regarding next demos# 24 onwards, regret that I don't have notes.. I don't know how or why I got into something else and missed taking notes...

Regds,

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DENOM WITH THE CAPS.

THE FINALE - 2 CHANNEL STEREO

DEMO NO.26 / 27

SOURCE: MARANTZ SA 7003
AMP: KRELL KAV300i
SPEAKERS: PROAC STUDIO 110 MK1

OBSERVATIONS:

INITIALLY THE COMBO DID NOT SOUND RIGHT. VIKI WAS PRETTY CLEAR FROM THE BEGINNING THAT KRELL BEGINS TO COME INTO ITS ELEMENT AFTER 20 -30 MINUTES ONCE IT IS WARM.

I HAVE HEARD THE KRELL KAV300 AS WELL AS THE PROAC 110'S IN THE NOT SO DISTANT PAST AT VIKI'S PLACE. AND IT DID SOUND DIFFERENT THEN.

WE RAN THROUGH A COUPLE OF TRACKS WITHOUT PAYING TOO MUCH ATTENTION, AFTER 30 MINUTES OR SO
WE PLAYED DECIDED TO DO SOME CRITICAL LISTENING AND PLAYED PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS.

YES - THE KRELLS DID OPEN UP AND MUSIC STARTED TO FLOW AGAIN BUT NOT UPTO EXPECTATIONS

HOWEVER I PERSONALLY LIKE THE SYNERGY OF KRELL WITH THE PROAC STUDIO 140.

THE 140 IS BRIGHTER THAN THE 110 AND WITH THE KRELL WARMTH MAKES IT A PERFECT COMBO AND SPOT ON SYNERGY.
(( NOTE - IMO THE OLDER KRELLS HAVE A WARMER SIGNATURE COMPARED TO THE NEWER ONES))

DENOM - INSISTED WE PLAY THE 110'S WITH EMOTIVA + ROTEL.

USING THE SAME SOURCE AND SAME TRACK WE GAVE THE 110 A FINAL GO.

MUCH BETTER SYNERGY. AND SIMPLY BRILLIANT. -
FOR THOSE WHO THINK THAT A BS CANNOT RIVAL A FS IN TERMS OF SPL.
NEED TO HEAR THE 110. IN A 430 SQ FEET ROOM . IT PRODUCES MORE THAN ADEQUATE BASS AND A TRULY MASSIVE SOUNDSTAGE.
VERY FEW BOOKSHELVES CAN DO THIS

A POINT THAT KEPT REPEATING ALL THROUGH THE MEET WITH ALL THE GEAR WE TESTED

1. ITS ALL ABOUT SYNERGY

PASS B1 + NORGE WITH FOCAL

ARCAM WITH KLIPSCH

KRELL 300/ELECTROCOMANIET WITH PROAC 140

EMO + ROTEL WITH PROAC 110

2. ITS ALL ABOUT POWER

POWER PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR

BUDGET SPEAKERS LIKE PIONEER , CA S30 ETC AS WELL AS THE MORE EXPENSIVE ONES ALL SEEMED TO OPEN UP AND EXCEL WITH PRE + POWER COMBOS AS LONG AS SYNERGY WAS SPOT ON

I have been eyeing the TEAC DAC for some time now. so knew exactly from where Denom picked it up.
I used to have Teac components till around 2008. ( had it for almost 12-14 years) ( I had the Amp + CDP + TT + Tuner + Cassette Deck all from the same series as well as their 3 way bookshelves )

The older gen ones were built very well. However TEAC lost the plot towards the end of the 90's and got into the mini hifi , run of the mill mass produced market.
They stuck to Escoteric brand name for their Hifi components and Tascam for Pro Audio

Thankfully TEAC has gotten back into the game with their new releases namely the Distinction and Reference series.
Hopefully they pave their way into India through dealers etc.

Hello to, team.

Indeed I have made this thread go little more interesting and merry fun.
It shows the love and affection of FM's towards Denom..

Now it's up to denom to ask for himself if he is dark with love and affection or fact's which is pricking

Sure, as per denom' statement there was no fun and I have contributed generously, may be he wanted some one to comment and contribute generously to messy write up.

Any one can point me to any writeup or reviews with lot of emoticons or hinlingo over forums. I will stand corrected and will apologise.(this sort of CAPS write up will not be approved by mod's on forums and this is a special event of hifivision Pune meet)

Am definitely not going to react and write against each FM who has pointed me,not going to wage war of words either.

What I said are just facts and you have every right to react for fact's. it's up-to one to learn from mistakes.

My last post on this thread enjoy & have more fun.

@captrajesh.

I just wanted to know if AP was manufacturer per customer needs or manufacturer as per his design. Indeed funny.

oak,

sure denom has many friends. ( and with good reason )

Myself included.

I have nothing to say to you apart from the point that maybe you could have PM'ed your feedback to him.. or start a separate thread on "Review writing" in the general lounge.. rather that making a direct comment on a review which is by us and for us.

I am sure you will agree.

Kind regards,
mpw

Actually, denom was drunk on single malt and other good spirits. He was also pricking a lot of balloons.

Mr Oak, What are you drunk on ?

Sure, as per denom' statement there was no fun and I have contributed generously, may be he wanted some one to comment and contribute generously to messy write up.

Thank you Mr Oak, I have been laughing and smiling at your generously messy writing. :D

I'm not privy to their business model and hence cannot answer that query. May be you should pose it to them directly.

BTW, I don't find it funny. :)

+ 1000000000000000 to that.

@ Oak it is a tough task. It is not like some senior guiding.

Think of this like all equal 35 senior persons , managing guys like us -- and on the top of this maintaing notes and wring briefly....

last year post mumbai meet - I was suppose to do analysis - and I faltered badly

so kudoes to Dave and Sonos we were able to read something useful something wortwhile

about style - in hindi there is one saying " ???????? ???? " .. it seem s you do not like hindi.... but and his spirit ..... but most of the members are...

and as they say - never kill a spirit .....BTW Dave is a spiritual person ( as they say proof is in pooding - here in photoes proof is in peg!!):cheers:

True that! It sure takes a lot of work to note all this down, process it in some orderly fashion and post all of this painstakingly without procrastinating. Kudos Dave! Lagey raho Denom bhai.

@ Hemantwaghe ..... 'samjho' and not 'samjo' .... it has to be a 'jha' .. :p:p
Have to be grammatically correct here now, else ........ ;)

The only way an AP product can sound bad is because something is broken or a serious mismatch issue. Not sure what went wrong here. If setup right, they play perfect music. Many experiences spread over many years with them.

And the gent is back in action sprouting riotous prose and as usual targeting a particular Indian brand  Well intentioned?? Not sure ! Comedy ?? Definitely !

To judge the SQ of any product you will need proper placement of speakers and also have to place yourself optimally to analyze the SQ. Meets are never a place to judge the SQ of any product but only meant for getting a basic comparative analysis vis-a-vis other products. Some product having higher SPL would sound better than the one having a lower SPL due to the volume and give the impression of sounding better but only after careful analysis you would be able to judge which one sounded better. During audition there should not be more than 2 to 3 people around if you are going to judge the SQ of the product, which i believe was not the purpose of the meet.

First of all we were not targeting any brand, neither pro nor against. This meet was to listen these gears collectively.

Yes AP did not sound correct but we did not investigate. I suspected if tube output of pre was not digested with the type of music. Another thing was matching speakers for power amp. We did not had anything which could match it. I know makers of AP from days of corrson audio. Though I never interacted directly but I appreciate their knowledge and seriousness about audio.

Cheers guys. There will be supporters and critics. This is an open forum and as long as someone is not undesirably vitriolic, i am sure that we do not mind someone speaking against and i am even more confident that denom is quite sporting.

Just catching up on the 'action' after a tough day @ work. Been reading all the posts in response to our good friend Oak & am really happy to learn that I have quite a few friends on the forum :)

As just4kix has rightly said that this is an open forum, where we will find the 'good, bad & the ugly', just have to accept it as is. No point in getting upset about it. I just am happy to take +ve's out of it. Perhaps, I should also learn from 'Guruji's' of Audio World in doing the business & thereby improving my knowledge further & also my writing skills (net etiquette w r t caps/emoticons/lingo)
for benefit of the forum. In doing so, I can make more friends & go further in our world of Audio/Video :)

What say oak???
BTW, would like to meet you, do let me know of your future visit to mumbai, surely I can learn more from your experience, if you are willing to teach that is.

Gentlemen, any thoughts or observations about the emotiva pre? Sorry, I don't mean to make this off topic, I was just curious and hoped to learn something, that's all.

My perception reg Emotive pre...
Compared to Pass B1 pre, it wasn't as transparent or refined. It added moderate amount of "zing" to music that would suit songs /composition that benefit with such character... e.g Rock, Pop...

Music such as soft Jazz, Ghazals may loose their serenity with this type of "zing" added.

Regds,

I liked what the Emotiva Pre offered at the price point. Comparison to the B1 is obvious but for a non diyer to acquire one would probably cost twice as much as the Emotiva. So I'll give it to the Emo a head to head in comparison.

However looked at in isolation too, the Emotiva was very detailed, with a slight boosted upper midrange like Sono mentioned. I prefer that brightness as it adds a level (false sense?) of detail to the instruments in that spectrum which sound "nicer" to my ears.
Everyone prefers some color or the other as a wise man told us at the meet ;) (you know who you are sir) but overall I'll be happy to own the Emotiva.

Will keep you in mind when i decide to let go of the USP-1. :D
I am contemplating on getting in the XSP-1 in a few months
