Hi Friends,

Greetings,

I am Nishant from Pune.

I had a 10 years old Sony Hi Fi system MCVX901 which went kaput and Sony folks didnt seem too interested in repairing it and no one was ready to take it as exchange. But I was hell bent to make some sense out of the bits and pieces left out i.e. basically the speakers - a pair of SSVX 888 (15cm cone speakers - 2 nos, and 5cm cone tweeter- nos, 6 ohm impedence, wt. 6.2 kg per speaker)

So I spoke to dealers in Pune and wrote mails to many a dealer ids in mumbai. None of them were enthuiastic about my speakers and tried to sell me a full blown AVR and a 5.1 system, or an AVR with a pair of Tower Speakers ... I was quite disappointed.

Budget was not an issue but lack of knowledge was. Then I got hold of id of Mr. Shyam Bajaj from this forum. I sent him the specifications of my speakers and sought his advice. He promptly replied and asked me to checkout Norge 2060 and pointed me to Mr. Behram of Aquarious. Mr. Behram was very enthuiastic and asked me to carry my speakers to his shop which I did and he gave me a lot of time with his CD/DVD collection my speakers and the Norge 2060 amp and the setup completely bowled me over. His technicians advised me to stick to my current speakers and upgrade later on sometime. There was no sales pitch in the entire interaction.:clapping:

So I bought the Norge 2060 and also the Norge 300 MkII FM tuner. And I am glad with the setup I have got. Its perfect for my taste and requirements. :yahoo:

My ears are really not developed yet to appreciate how another system will be better than this .. but hoping that someday I would be able to differentiate between a good and a not so good system and THEN look at an upgrade.

I am grateful to the elightening posts on this forum which let me setup this system . Heartfelt thanks to all techies out there ..

I am a outright newbie hence wouldnt be able to write a review of the setup. Hopefully after a month or so I will be able to put some words ..

Thanks again,

Regards,
Nishant

Hi snishant,

Me too using two pair of SONY bookshelves(one came with FHG-80 and the other one with MHC-VX33) in my hometown, with an old BENYTONE M7070. I also faced similar problem like you with my FHG-80, as the power amplifier IC(STK 4182II) got blown-off and couldn't able to find a replacement, so went for this used BENYTONE and the combo performs well !

I could see that most of the SONY bookshelves outperforms many audiophile speaker brands in bass dept. (May be this is only my opinion :) ).

Welcome to HiFiVision and have a good time...

+1 to that, even I was surprised when I connected the speakers from my mini sony hi fi system MHC_???(not sure about the exact model) with my new yamaha rx-v571 receiver with the smooth sound they were sounding even on the local FM stations. My system is working well with occasional 3 VCD changer getting stuck. I am using them till my energy speakers comes from US. But definitely these speakers with dual woofers sound so good with my htpc the hd audio just blows away the windows..Even I amp planning to do the same after I get my energy speakers..

Welcome to the forum.

Snishant, Welcome to the Forum .

Behram is a really nice guy and I have dealt with him several times. Aquarius is amongst the few places that I know that will never try to sell you something if its not required.
The Advice is usually spot on.

Amongst all the places I have visited in Pune. Aquarius / Behram has always been a place which I have the utmost respect for.

Hi Nishant

Welcome to Hfv

the speakers look good and i have heard them at my jym , they were being played with a local amp and philips cd player and was quite a beautiful sounding speakers

the sound will be much matured, the bass will be wider and you will enjoy the tabla sounds etc

if i have to suggest a very low budget upgrade optons , i would suggest you to add crossover to the spealers , use little better speaker cable , check if there is daming material inside the box , if not do add some

use good speaker stand or keep them at ear leavel and keep atleast 6 feet distance

That will be great

Thanks for the warm welcome friends ..

The update is that I am loving the setup .. The FM tuner is just great and works very well with the Norge 2060 amp ..

Further to that, I fed the audio out of TATA sky to the amp .. The result was good .. Well, not great .. But just about OK for my limited movie viewing ..

I listen to a wide range of music - Pink Floydd, Eagles, Bhupen Hazarika, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Old bollywood ... And the system does a reasonable justice to the entire range ...

I have put cheap cables right now .. Will get better set of cables and try with those ..

I am spending a lot of time on hfv these days trying to learn the tricks of the trade .. Lets see where I go from here :)

Nishant

Congrats for the new acquisition!
I completely agree with your comments about Mr. Behram, he is a very nice person, understands the audio reproduction, and equipment's very well, makes you very comfortable and that's what you need during auditions. The entire staff at Aquarius (Sandeep, Amit) is very helping.
Have you connected any antenna to the Norge tuner?
I am using Audioquest 16 awg (purchased from Aquarius) for my fronts, and they are really good.

Hey Sann, Yep .. I have connected the antenna that came with the Tuner set. The reception isnt all that great in my house .. so I need to tweak the angle of the antenna once in a while ..

Also, Mr. Behraam mentioned that he clears out his demo system once every quarter .. so he told that he will inform me about that and I can pick up some stuff from there .. Not sure if that is a good idea ..

Right now, I am pretty much done ... A pair of towers may be an year down the line ;)

wel come here !
slight artificial bass is due to the drivers , as per as my observation the cd hifi speakers are for party/film music , many a times rock
and i like some more bass , but if that comes from as result of good design , keeping mids at decent level , sytem is very enjoyable
thatz why my MS canivals suit me

sweet midrange is missed ....check it out , however many audiophile BS like basic warf/polks/CA dry on bass

Yes, that was my point. :)
They usually tune the amp+speakers for normal listener who should feel the thump, which makes them "HI-FI" according to him/her.
And, yes, I have really felt that the mids are not sweet, as you said.

But had really got disappointed hearing a 50k worth Energy BS paired to 100+W ONKYO , during an audition, literally there's no bass !

Hi snishant,
You will need to connect a yagi antenna, you can take DIY route for that, will give you a better reception and reduce the noise, which is very important to enjoy the quality of FM.
I don't know whether you will get any reduced price offer for demo speakers, as I was told that some people give them their new speakers for proper burning in, so there may be takers for 'burned in' speakers. But you can get some discount on other electronics equipment. This is my opinion, check with him when he clears off the stuff.
