HI friends.

Quite a few of you guys are masters in this vinyl/TT world. I had a Philips 533 (bought by my dad in early 1970s) which used to run on eveready batteries for 20 odd years. then it lay idle for about 15 odd years and I got it repaired and it worked perfectly. some unfortunate incidents (nothing to do with the instrument) later, i had to part with it. My sister had one Philips 633 with dual stereo speakers. By sheer chance and luck, I got another Philips 533 (single stereo speaker) at a friend's who were moving to another city. It had not been used for at least 27 odd years that i have known them. I even didn't know that they had a TT. When I plugged it in and switched it on, it was playing even though the stylus was broken and speed controller was malfunctioning. Now I have got contact of one good mechanic in South Kolkata, courtesy members of this group and hopefully I can get it working fully soon.

after having read some through a few discussions here, I have one query / curiosity : How do you experienced hands rate Philips 533 as a turntable player?

The most impressive thing about the 533 is the complete silence. No rumble or motor noise at all. The bass response is deep and clean with the overall tone very pleasing.

I'm an novice when it comes to analog gear but I can certainly appreciate the 533 low noise floor and excellent sound.

Dear Yogeshraj,

I do also stay and south calcutta and repaired many 533 , 633 , 832 record Players. I can just assure you that 533 is a very good set but it is mono and 633 is stereo. Besides, 533also having a DC motor with a govornor unit and that circuit is built up by some germanium trasistors. In respect of todays world. It is better to have a old player which has an AC motor, as it is still available in market and failure chance is less than DC one. In any case if 533 motor fails to work then you might have to find a problem to get it. Repairing is also not going to be so easy. At the end both of the sets are very good. Now it's up to you which one suits you better.

I have some very fond memories with the 533 from the late 1970s and early 80s. We used to have one in our school and it was carried around to the junior school for moral science classes (being a catholic school, they had a lot of religious stuff on records), it was additionally used for playing dance numbers and background music for stage performances (dances and dramas) during our school youth festival and annual day, it was also used to play music in the auditorium and for the school assembly while students assembled. But most importantly, it was used for playing noon-music during the lunch break across the school campus. We used to be volunteers for noon music and our job was to select records and play them. Some of us (not me though as dad would not lend me his) used to bring records from home to play. I recollect Boney M's night flight to Venus as a huge hit. The children would stop playing and gather around a speaker to listen. Then the priest who had this keen interest in music, and maintained a record and cassette collection, was transferred to another school, after which the noon-music adventure came to an end. The record player itself was very silent and tough. It sounded very nice on its own little speaker (which was actually in the lid). I have no recollection how it was wired to the Ahuja amplifier which sat beside it on an old Radiogram. But I do have a picture of it :)

I have philips 533 and it's running fine till now, courtesy Mr. Subhabrata Dutta Roy from S kol. He also made a preamplifier stage for its ceramic cartridge and now it's running with double speakers. Also I had already sourced ac motor for it in case dc motor fails to work.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
