There are far too many in that list i do not care about but a few that i would need to watch

Guys I am at ZERO. I have seen maybe 5 or 6 movies in the last 10 years.
Now I want to make a start. Are these old movies legal to download and are their copyrights expired so I can get them for free somewhere ?(thinly veiled question :D)?

PM me for suggestions (where?) :):):)

Thanks

As in books, I suppose movies too have a 100 yr copyright, so you wont find any movie that can be legally downloaded (free of charge).

But fear not, the Pirate is your mate.

Fear Not. They usually have a 70/75-year copyright. This - Feature Films : Free Movies : Download & Streaming : Internet Archive - is your friend ;).

See this Wiki page for the full list of movies in the public domain - List of films in the public domain in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Done 119.

Some of them are on my list, have the DVD's but need to pick up the time.

BTW, do you check a movie as seen, if you have seen the modern avatar rather than the one in imdb top 250. For example, I have seen the modern King Kong and dont intend to watch the b/w version, so havent checked it as seen. I dont know if everyone uses the same logic.

I only check what I've seen. You can't really check the original version based on watching the 'updated' version. In most cases, originals are well, originals and re-makes are crap-makes, though some are good or in the rare cases, better.

I've watched almost all versions of King Kong. 1933's original was very good in spite of the dated special effects, 1975's was all Jessica Lange but does not stick to the original story. Peter Jackson's version of King Kong sticks to the original story along with updated effects and a long running time :)

In original and re-makes, I've watched Hitchcock's masterful "Psycho" original and the not so impressive Gus Van Sant version.

I've yet to watch the original "Cape Fear" even though I've watched Scorsese's version with De Niro and Nick Nolte. Likewise for "To be or Not to be" - I've watched Mel Brooke's version, but not the original 1942 version, which I may watch some day. I'm going to catch up 1925's Ben-Hur soon though! :)

Considering that there are always some differences in how they appeal to me, no point checking the original when you've watched the modern treatment.

i am such an avid movie fan - but have NEVER DOWNLOADED a single movie in my life!!!

primarily because i always thought downloaded movies will not have dvd like quality and also could expose computer to virus.

so is the above link "safe"?

appreciate some insights.

btw movie fans in bangalore are probably aware of a dvd rental/sales shop on church street called habitat. i have a small shelf there where i sell foreign movies - chinese, japanese, korean, russian, french etc. so whoever is interested ... :-)

@hydra,

Thanks. But, I am still chasing you (far behind) in other lists :p

@nandac,

The quality of movies on archive.org vary. Some of them are decent, while some others can be irritating. For instance, there are some movies with spanish subtitles embedded (don't remember which), some are altered (Nosferatu has different color filters to differentiate between night and day scenes). So, it's all movie specific. It is a better way to get access to some of the very old films as most of them are harder to get in DVD/BR. I think of it mostly as a beta version for checking out movies. If you love a movie, then it makes sense to find the best, most complete / restored version available on DVD/BR and buy it.

As for virus, in my experience, no!

esanthosh, thanks for the pointers. i will try a download of 'night of the living dead' for starters. any idea how long it will take to download (i use bsnl) and an ideal time to do that (in the middle of the night?).

additionally i am looking for a korean movie called "the unjust". if you could point me to a reliable download (without risk of virus) i would appreciate it. thanks.

Even a 720p BRRip file of 700MB will beat a DVD in PQ. Download 720p or 1080p files greater than 2.5GB and you will get 5.1 sound also.

700MB takes around 2-2.5 hours as I'm getting only 90kBps speed on my 2mbps (256kBps) connection. If your broadband supports around 200kBps then 700MB movie files can be downloaded in one hour.

Please remember discussing and giving illegal download links is against forum rules.

I've slowed down somewhat these days, so you have a fighting chance, heh, heh :p

Nowadays I'm mostly rewatching movies I've watched earlier. Some of the movies I've watched years back are giving me much more enjoyment now, than when I'd watched them for the first time. I'm also watching a lot of the current-day trash -- much needed to get a proper perspective :ohyeah:
