How much storage do you guys have for remux collection?

Into the future I can see myself having a HTPC/Media server for content consumption rather than many OTT subscriptions. The problem with OTT is that their streaming quality is not the best and our favourite content may not be available one day without any notice. With this in mind I have started collecting remuxes of movies I like off the internet. The idea is to have a fair amount of movies/shows in my possession as I keep improving my setup. Each 4k movie is about 50-70 gb in size. My question is if someone here is already doing this then how much of a storage do you have? Is it viable to have 10 or a 20 TB storage in a HTPC and stream it with Plex or Jellyfin without any issues?

Interested to know your inputs.

I have six external hard disks of 5 TB each. I still need to buy some more hard disks.

1 TB & 4TB nvme drives now that I know OTT has improved a lot in the last few years. Won't buy HDD as none of mine survived.

I went down this route with about 4tb of HDD, only problem is with many remuxes now getting close to 75-80gb, hardly able to store 45-50 movies. So to store say a 200 movie collection one will need 16tb. This is with 4k HDR. So I just dropped the idea. I just maintain 1 tb now and delete movies.

I am toying with similar ideas for having remux movies. I read somewhere someone suggesting having pen drives for each movie. which seems a costly affair. Don't know how much cost cutting can be done by buying in lots/wholesale.

Having SSDs for movie collection seems like the way to go for faster access. Also getting multiple internal SSDs (500GB ones, or the cheapest ones) in bulk/wholesale might be cheaper than the pen drive option.

Because if we are investing in good quality on HT setup, good quality source for movies is necessary too. I don't currently have an HT setup; I am toying with ideas to figure out expenses.

Also, can we debate on buying Bluray Disks vs investing on SSD server for remux movies. Can the Bluray buyers please rise up and shed light on this. Your inputs are greatly appreciated.

I have a NAD with 8TB storage in Raid 1 config.

However, I store compressed versions of movies of 1080p. Each movie is 5 to 10gb.

Another option would be storing remux movies on bluray.
Advantage would be

• you can store multiple movie on single bluray, considering size of remux between 5 gb to 10 gb.
• Long term storage compared to SSD or HDD. Provided you handle bluray with care.
  • bluray will at least last 10 to 20 years.
• No need of dedicated server for storage and running it 24*7
  • This also incur additional cost of Networking or WiFi router since requirement of bandwidth for high quality movie is higher.
• Just purchase bluray play that can play remux movies.

This actually is a good idea! Are you doing this? Any shortcomings?

which remux are you getting at 5-10 gigs? at that size it's no remux, it's an encode and not a particularly good one unless it's anime or an older release.

Also folks with your own NAS setup, how are yall sourcing your HDDs? I feel sorry jealous when I see US HDD prices or sites likes Serverpartdeals

They consider it a bad price if they get HDDs for an aggregate 14$/tb and meanwhile here, it'll be our luck if we can score a HDD at even 20-22$/tb

I would suggest PrimeABGB or your local reseller, especially if you have a good relation with them.

I don't know any reselles unfortunately, was thinking of bulk buying either from ABGB or TE resellers

Buying used HDDs is a risky option, not only must you consider warranty (money) but failure (data). At that point you need to ask how valuable the data is to you and if a cheaper cost is worth it. I personally buy new HDDs, both from local resellers and Prime ABGB. I shifted to Prime since the local reseller stopped supporting me and I could not obtain warranty for a disk he provided that was in the warranty period, the WD site showed the disk was intended for a different region. When I sent the disk to him he gave excuses and claimed he did not provide the disk. I would suggest to only buy from a local reseller if you trust them.

They will give you bulk but their prices aren't necessarily the cheapest, especially if you go hunting. Also they take some time to respond for items that are not in their own stock. They do give you a quote for other items but depending on the item and it's cost this may take some time. They seemed most interested in items in their stock or items they can source easily. In case of HDDs some of the larger SMR HDDs were not available last I checked and I did not pursue since I was looking for CMR so it depends what they have/can source.

thats the thing, I don't know of any other place than Prime/TE resellers which would give bulk discount, do you have any others I can look up for these?
