Hi,

My brother has just bought Sony LED TV which has inbuilt wi-fi (Model 55HX750). He has a Laptop Sony vaio which too is wi-fi, and a desktop computer. He wants to know how can he use the wi-fi option on the TV to enable to watch U-tube or to use skype.

1) Is a router necessary for the same. 2) Does the MTNL people need to configure the settings for the wi-fi connectivity. Pls let us know.

Will the vaio of any help since that too is wi-fi

Do you have a wifi router? If so connecting the tv to the network is easy. If you don't have a wifi router then you can create a virtual wifi hotspot in your laptop provided the os is Windows 7. Then share the internet connection with this newly created hotspot. Scan for wifi network from your tv and connect to the created virtual hotspot. There are tools for creating virtual hotspot like connectify, maryfi etc. but the easy way is to create a bat file with command:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=HotspotName key=password keyUsage=persistent
netsh wlan start hostednetwork

This will create a virtual wifi named HotSoptName and the wifi network key is password.

To disconnect the hotspot create another bat file and the comman is 'netsh wlan stop hostednetwork'

Interesting question. The detailed answer can be quite long. I do recommend you do some reading on internet, they will help you a lot. I will try to keep it short here.

You need:

(1) A modem - You have it. The MTML modem is what brings internet to your house.

(2) A router - This may or may not be needed, based on how capable your modem is. This router should do three things for you.

(a) Serve as a DHCP server
(b) Serve as an access point
(c) Serve as a router (lets keep it simple, no need to go into the details here)

In many cases, the modem provided by the network provider is also a router and can also act as an access point. If your MTNL modem has these functionalities, you don't need a separate router. But if it doesn't do all four things, you need to buy one.

My preferred brands for Routers at different price points are: Netgear, TP-Link, and Mercury.

(3) LAN cable - You will need LAN Cables unless your modem does everything and your desktop has wifi.

Assuming that you need to work with all the three above mentioned things, here is how you would connect them.

  1. Switch off all your devices (Modem, Router, TV, Computers).
  2. Connect the Modem and Router to electricity.
  3. Connect the WAN/Internet port of router to (one of the) LAN port(s) on your modem.
  4. Switch on the modem. Wait for a 3-4 minutes.
  5. Switch on the router. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  6. If everything goes right, you should have wifi signal in your house.
  7. Switch on the computer/TV other devices. They should be configured to use DHCP.
  8. You will have to select the network from the available networks list and supply the password.
  9. The name of your network and the password to connect to it, is usually printed at the bottom of the router.
  10. If all devices have been at their default setting (no tweaking was done in past), all your devices should be able to connect wirelessly.
  11. If your desktop doesn't have wifi, you can either add a wifi card to it, or run a LAN cable to it's Ethernet port from one of the LAN ports of your router.
Hope that will get you up and running.

Your TV and laptop are only wifi enabled - meaning that they can connect to a wifi network, and use the wifi network to connect to the internet. The wifi basically replaces the wire that you would have to use to connect your devices to your internet modem so that they can access the internet.

You still need to establish a wifi network in your house so that these wifi devices can connect to it. Hence, a wifi router is necessary.

Before the OP goes into setting up wifi network and its promises of video streaming :) I want to know if the laptop already has HDMI port to be connected to TV directly? That would be the best option, install XBMC and buy a 1500 INR MCE Remote

I think this model has the ability to directly connect to the internet and has inbuilt software to browse/play media directly (without using a laptop or some other streaming device). Hence, it would be desirable to setup a wifi network, IMHO - most wifi routers are really inexpensive anyway.
If OP is so inclined, you should try to get Netflix to work. Your TV even has a dedicated Netflix button :-) You will then have access to thousands of movies and TV series in full HD.

It would be slightly more complicated to setup as you will need to get a wifi modem that also supports a proxy. You will also have to pay for an additional proxy service in addition to Netflix monthly subscription.

Of course, all of this is only needed if you want to stream video over the internet.
