Never been earlier into DIY of any kind or building speakers cabinet or open baffle. Also Know & heard only boxee sound at my place...

When heard Rajiv/ Santhosh Altec based system those become an reference sound to judge other systems. Later at Rajagopal place when i heard open baffle with Altec it satisfied me in all level and also impressed me in itz simplicity in construction.

With the ever helping hand and guidance of Rajiv / Rajagopal / Santhsoh completed the present setup consist of Jelabs open baffle fitted with Philips AD5200 full-range driver + Altec 802D HF driver with 811B horn.

Thanks to Rajagopal for his excellently fabricated & finished JElabs open baffle / Thanks for Rajiv for giving me original unmolested Altec 802D HF unit / Thanks to Santhosh for giving his Altec 811B horn.

So long i heard only boxee sound and now a big relief for me on hearing open baffle with good(deep) bass and uncoloured sound !! Wondering how a deep bass coming from an single baffle which an box were struggling to give out...;)

I have heard Rajagopal's speakers, and they are not boom-boom bass. Not only are they very civilised, but he is able to alter the tonal balance at will using an adjustable crossover box.

Congratulations, srinisundar. I must come and see --- with my ears :)

Thad, by "boom boom bass" didn't actually mean that. I thought most people would get the pun.

I meant a more cleaner and open bass, well controlled modulated and natural sounding unlike the "BOOM BOOM BOX BASS" (Including mine I guess) we generally hear. :ohyeah:

I'm having a bad day. Been ranting all over the place. Whereas my reply wasn't a rant, my sense of humour, understanding and appreciation were absent*. Sorry for the misunderstanding. :o

Do get to listen. This kind of setup has its advantages and its disadvantages. I don't think it would be my personal choice, but it is quite an experience.

The construction is ridiculously simple (well, unless one goes for formed wooden horns or something like that :D ) but I don't think anything else about the set-up is. My guess was that room placement is critical, and Rajagopal confirmed that he had spent many hours on this. Art, knowledge and skill required in large amounts! Even if I had enough of them, I wouldn't have the patience. It's nice to be able to listen to the result of somebody else's art, knowledge, skill and patience :)

*My prescription to self: less internet, more music ;)

That is what I call "BOOM BOOM BASS" !

Never heard open baffles before, wonder how they sound?

Vinod

Yes i could understand your words in first instant itself what you meant. Exactly i put the youtube by recording the song way down deep is to mention the same..

I also wonder how/where the bass is coming from an single baffle. Marvellous and of-course valuable time in researching various aspects were taken into consideration to conclude the design of the baffle.

It shall be good for diy guys to finish the raw baffle in one hour and test the available speaker in hand to experience the sound.;);)

I laughed at few of guys(including myself) in search of bass in boxee speakers. Way to go if you have space and WAF(wife acceptance factor);)

You are welcome Thad anytime. You have heard big boys at Rajagopal house, this will be tiny driver which is not yet tuned.;)

Not to worry Thad all said and taken in good spirit!!!

On another note, if I had those speakers in the house, the next moment I would be standing along with them outside the house !!! :) :) (Too large by my count, with the hope that the quality of sound is worth it).

Thanks, I'll try to do that in a week or two :) Hey, your room looks different to my previous visit...

If I did it, my wife would be out there with me: there wouldn't be room for either of us in the house! :ohyeah:

except these OB

Quite!

On the bass issue, from what I recall from reading that Rajagopal pointed me at, the bass response is absolutely related to the size of that baffle. It may look like just a piece of wood, but it is still very much maths/physics

Congrats Shri,I remember I had taken out drivers from my DIY speakers in school days and place then openly. The sound used to be much open and powerful(Bass)than they were in boxes.Nice DIY from you.

Congrats Srini. I can see the HT gear (and the screen) literally being edged out of view. ;) Pun intended.:D

Only recently heard Capt Rajesh's Tannoys unboxed. It is a wonder that they sound as good as they do, but certainly there is no improved bass there.

I guess there is a reason for boxes. Or, at least, for baffles.

And, if I remember my reading right, (bass depth dependent on baffle board size) it takes a big, big, piece of wood to go as low as the right box.

Another one bites the dust!

Congrats Srini, have fun ;)

Time to 'junk' the 'boxes' eh???

Am playing with some 'exposed' drivers myself
