Go for a pair of bookshelf speakers for now. Save up for a good sub which you can add on later when funds allow you to spend more.

Look around for a used/demo speakers if you can at your local electronics store.
You might have a local forum with a good online community.
You never know there might be a good soul out there looking for a good home for his/her old gear.
