Hi All,

Anyone has idea on what could be import duty on M1 DAC? It is expected to cost 28K from Divine Audio UK.

If someone who has imported this DAC or a similar priced DAC/Amp, can provide some inputs it would really help.

Thanks

I had imported a Rega DAC last september from the UK, via Aramex ShopnShip. The Customs duty was around 12% of the price of the DAC + shipping cost.

EDIT: Going by the link anm posted above, I think it makes more sense to buy locally.

M1 is retailing around 32-33k in Hyderabad Audio People. Try to bargain before getting it from abroad.

Blasto has decided to purchase it in hyd, so may be u can join and bargain another 1-2k :D

Price i was quoted by Audio People in Chennai was 40K :( and in Bangalore 36.5K

That too I am not sure, if it is the latest model (M1DAC - A). Divine Audio price is for the latest model.

Anywaz, let me PM BLASTO. ANM - Adding your interest in that PM.

I bought the M1 DAC yesterday at Audio People yesterday for 33k. I don't
Think it is the latest model with asynchronous USB. It doesn't say that on the box. Tonight will test it out with 24 bit 96khz from laptop and see if plays. Otherwise, would return it for the new model. I guess they have lowered the prices because it is an older model.

On another note, M1DAC wasn't working yesterday on one channel, turns out my RCA cable is faulty!

I really don't know, heh, heh. Aramex managed everything, so maybe they had some way.

And well, the description of the item was a bit detailed, on my request: It read "Rega USB Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC) for Computer". That might have helped clearly define it as a Computer Accessory, rather than as an Electronic Item, by uh, mistake. I'm using it with my Music PC, so... :)

It should be easy enough to identify. The new M1 DAC has an LED indication for 176.4khz on the face plate.

The old one did not have such an indication. (I got this information from the comments in the Stereophile/Audio Stream review.)

Here are the pics of the one from Audio People.
They are not sure of the sync input or the model per-se.

According to them, this is Jul-2011 manufactured and Nov-2011 imported and if it is not the new one, the new one is not yet released in India.

To me though, it looks like the new one. Manufactured date is Jul-2011 and doesn't have 32Khz. Both ame as soul's link.

Divakar,
Why do you think it is not the new one? Any specific reason?

The font-panel of the M1 DAC shows the incoming sample rate through a series of blue LEDs; 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz and 192kHz (those familiar with the old version of the M1 DAC will notice the absence of the 32kHz LED indicator and my guess is no one will miss it).

Musical Fidelity M1 DAC (the newer one) | AudioStream

Hey soul,

Please check the same link you posted. There is picture of the DAC where it also has 176.4Khz. They missed it while listing down.

There are totally 6 LEDs in the pic and only 5 listen in the review.

anm, hope you question is answered?

I think the DAC in the pic that BLASTO posted is indeed the new one with Async USB. It has the 176.4kHz indicator on the front panel. Then there's also the "JUL 2011" manufacturing month imprint, the same as in the Stereophile/Audio Stream review.

Yes.... glad to be answered :)

This definitely seems to be the Async USB Model.

BLASTO: Thanks for the pics. Will await your input on final price for a group buy, hoping for a pleasant surprise ;)

Currently they seem to have limited number of pieces (4-5 I think) and 33k is the price I enquired for 2 pieces (down from 36k).
The person resonsible for pricing (jalal) is not in country till 8th.

If I get an approx number, I can setup a group buy and press for ~30k with B&W.

Please post your interest in this thread itself.

Currently it is me, anm, soul and divakar.

Taste of the pudding is in it's eating! The M1 DAC I bought from Audio People is indeed the new model with the asynchronous USB. Played back 24 bit 96khz recording! :) it also has the 176.4 kHz option on the panel. So buy in peace. I hope I get a better price if it's negotiated down :)

The most significant bump in performance I find is playing back MP3s through the DAC. Superb spatial imaging of recording that otherwise sounded it came out of a closed box.

Of course, my better half can't understand what all this brouhaha is for 30k, she doesn't hear any difference :) be warned, have a strategy/good explanation
