I have LG Full HD TV and an HD DVD player.
When I play some AVI files only the audio is heard and I see a message "HD Video is not supported".
I tried connecting using HDMI cable and normal Video out cable and the result is same.
Is it an isue with my player or TV?
If it is an HD TV, it should play HD Video, right?
Any help will be appreciated.
regards

no issues with TV..
It is the DVD Player..
It is not supporting the video format..
Your next question might be that the DVD player is supposed to play AVI files..
for which my answer would be -
AVI is a video container which can contain many number of formats such as divX,XVid,h.264
In layman terms, if you downloaded this file.. check the filename first, if it contains "264", forget about it..if not then check the file details from the site, check again for 264..if the video codec is h264/x264 then your DVD player would not play this type..

Thank you very much.
I checked the codec. It is XVID.
The other avi files also show the same codec, but I am able to watch those !!
Any tips?

When I compared the "problematic" avi file with a proper one I found that the resolution and framerate is more with the unplayable file. Could that be a reason?

the resolution is the most probable cause..
if it is not in a format of either 4:3 or 16:9 then the DVDp wouldn't be able to play it..also a resolution of more 1280x720 might not be supported with the DVDp

if the framerate is 23.xxx or 25 then it should be playable..if it is like 29.xxx or 30 then it can be an issue..
but most of the movies would have 23.xxx or 25.. it is only the old B&W movies or camera rips which have 29.xxx/30 fps

since the error you see as "HD Video is not supported"..
that means your dvdp doesn't support divx HD playback..
what is the resolution of the file you are playing?

Thanks...

The DVD player is playing divx files and is mentioned as HD player !
The resolution is 1280X688, another file 800X432
Framerate is 23.97
Bitrate is 32kb/s

I checked a few other AVI files which are being played and found that only difference is that those files have leser reslutions than 800X***

Hi,

Can you let us know the brand and model of the player? It looks like the problem is to do with the player rather than the TV.

Cheers!

can you provide the resolution for the files which the player is able to play?

your unplayable files have a aspect ratio of 1.86 and 1.85 respectively..
this can be a reason for the DVDp not playing these files, although it is highly unlikely as it is a common aspect ratio..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)

432 for 16:9 gives 768
688 for 16:9 gives 1224

it is not the problem with TV. If you use any HD media player, it will play those files. But if you play HD movies using USB of TV or that of DVD player, it wouldnot.
Even new Sony BD player which has USB port, would play the files. SD movies you can play.

TV Is LG Jazz (Full HD)
Player is LG Full HD upscaling (upto 1080p)

using a software I reduced the resolution of the avi to 720X*** (keeping the same aspect ratio) and it played !
