I am asking this question as the cost of new one is very high. One more question is will repair cost be too high if the second hand AVR gets repaired. Sorry, I am not able to find a genuine reply from anywhere in real world, so hoping to find answers in this MB.

Any used electronics will carry that risk and repair costs depend on what has got wrong hence very difficult to generalize. It is a risk you are taking in order to get something at a value since there is no warranty and depends on usage.

This is a same as buying a used vehicle

You can try one thing. In you tube I saw many are assembling avrs which can support 4k also and except atmos we can get many sound formats.
Prices from 20k.

Yes there's a risk. Repair costs will be expensive depends on the issue.
If you can get used amps from known sources like from your friends ...or close forum mates ..etc. then may be it's little reliable.
Some people will be selling good used AVRs just for upgrading to latest AVRs themselves. Finding such good avr is challenge && you should be lucky to get one.
Keep Looking for Classifieds sections in HFV forum.
When buying check it thoroughly and ask for minimum guarantee at least for a month.
Don't buy from Local AVR service shops where they repair and sell used AVRs, they are selling on high price point and not much reliable.

Instead you can also opt for new entry level AVRs that could cost you 30 to 40k.

One way of getting a cheaper surround system is to buy a digital to 5.1 or 7.1 converter, available online

Connect that to stereo amps and then to speakers. This is how i used to run my 5.1 system by using the analog out from the dvd player or PC to 3 stereo amps.

Had to stop that and buy a receiver when DVD players stopped having analog outputs

The converters that are available now can help you do the same at low cost

There are a few YouTube channels that can make superb looking receivers with most of the features that you want. A couple of them from Kerala where there is a language barrier but since many words are in English you get the hang of what he's saying

Yamaha avr get easily repaired which I have experienced. Even authorized service center charges also reasonable.
When you buy second hand avr, you need to check its working conditions, all inputs working, Display out is proper, its doesn't shuts down when volume is turned loud or its not running very hot.

Buying from genuine dealer or seller, there is less risk as they may tell true history and issues.
Lastly its luck :)

It depends on the used AVR condition. Should be fine if it is well maintained and not too old.
Also check if any service center available in your place for the AVR brand.
There is always risk associated with any electronics used or new.

You can check with SARADHI ELECTRONICS FROM VIZAG. They are good and RHYTHEM from tamilnadu.
These were the two chaps i was referring to. Don't know about performance but since they use individual cards for various components getting it repaired/replaced by them will be a better bet than going for repairs of brand name AVRs. On an average these service centres rarely explain what's wrong but quote 12 to 16K for repairs even if a 200 rs transistor and a couple of resistors are replaced

I've bought 3 used AVR's so far, two from this forum and they worked fine and still are working fine
- Sherwood 6502 ( have sold it)
- Yamaha RX V571 ( TV duty now)
- Denon 3600H ( HT duty)

but as said earlier, electronics new or used is a bit of a gamble,
my experience so far has been good, especially if you buy from this forum as people here generally take good care of their gear

I generally think there is no issue in buying 2nd hand electronic products as most of the parts are anyways solid state devices so the failure is not directly proportional to use. Obviously buying from people who care for their products is preferable as they would have taken loving care of the product and would have taken pains to keep it looking and sounding pristine.

Yes, as another FM suggested you can buy used AVR's from forum like HFV. Unlike a mobile phone or laptop AVR's are stationery products and are not moved around once fixed and cosmetically it will look good.

While there's handful of threads to know about Denons, Marantz, Yamahas, but i seldom see any post on Sherwood..

How was the Sherwood AVR you owned in the past sounding?

Can you brief tell your experience around it? I've planned to go for it next year or so..
Your response will be helpful for me to decide. :)

This was my first amplifier of any kind with a pair of Yamaha NS 8390 floor standing speakers and were great then after which i picked up a NAD 3020 stereo amp which completely blew away the sherwood ( for music)
and now Denon 3600h has been great for movies but nad is better for music compared to denon too
i don't think it's fair to compare an old sherwood to relatively newer Denon but if i do then denon is much better and i have no idea about the new sherwood amp/AVR's
but as an AVR sherwood 6502 was good and trouble free for as long as i had it

As per above review , Sherwood supposed to be good budget option with good power output.
Also Sherwood is in AVR market for the decade how ever its not quite popular in India.
You may reach out above guy for Demo and further enquiries.

What is your budget and which AVR you shortlisted which you found expensive?

My budget is 30k. Most AVRs are above 50k.
Entry level AVRs costs closure to your budget
Denon AVR-X250BT costs around 35k. but Entry level Avrs are 5.1 only.
It will be good enough to start with...
Later when you have budget consider upgrade to atmos or more channel AVR
