I currently use my laptop (Win 7 64bit) for streaming to my speakers via foobar for music and Tversity for movies besides general surfing. I use VLC/MPC for local viewing of movies and use it to rip using dbpoweramp, use mkvmerge to convert to mkv any rips (to avoid transcoding).

Is it worth upgrading to Win 8, considering its so cheap to upgrade <2k Rs.?

Will there be stuff that breaks?

Didnt know which section to put, it, but thought this is the most appropriate, considering the usage.

When did you buy the laptop??? If its genuine Win7 bought after July 2012 then the offer is Rs. 650, at which price it certainly is worthwhile otherwise I say I do not use any of the new Win8 features and with a Start Button application using it just like a Win7 machine (ofcourse boot time is greatly improved specially since I have SSD and its only 3 seconds but I reboot my system once in a week or so, and a few more extra seconds never hurt me earlier)

Based on the usage, you don't require upgrade to Windows 8. You will not see major performance jump on the applications that you use.
However, If you are intended to buy the Win8 OS, would suggest you use Win 8 in dual boot mode and give it a try as new OS if don't like it you can always uninstall.
I have it Dual boot mode but rarely use it, however I am planning to by Surface Pro once it comes out. I think on Surface tablet (or tablet) where Win8 will be useful.

Stick with 7. 8 is presently still a disaster.

There is simply nothing disastrous about it, its simply people afraid of change or bias who have spread gossips and rumors. The only negative thing about it is having no start button which can be easily rectified by using any of the many Start Button applications (I guess now there is some registry entry changes as well which will make the start button functional). Ofcourse if you do not like the metro GUI (which I agree is simply unusable on a desktop/laptop) then do not use it but rest of the OS is as polished as Win7 and has a few advantages in some of the other things. People on Win XP can definitely skip Win7 and directly upgrade to Win8. Though I agree there is no apparent reason except for slight performance improvement for people with Win7 to upgrade to Win8

8 is NOT an upgrade over 7, it's a sideways move.

I tried 8 the day it's beta was out. If beta was 80% or more of production, it's an OS I don't want. I will stick to 7 till the time it becomes absolutely obsolete.

I dont see support for foobar, Tversity, mkvmerge for Windows 8. To me that would be the deal breaker more than the OS itself, unless there are workarounds.

If it works on Win7 then it will mostly work on Win8. And out of the lot atleast foobar works for sure.

I've used windows 8 since Dec 2011 (right from the Beta days).

On a PC without touch, windows 8 can be quite tricky. Dragging the mouse sideways across the start screen (modern UI) and then sometimes scrolling vertically in the same app can be frustrating. However it does offer better boottime and overall slightly snappier function.

For a PC with touchscreen, windows 8 is a beast. (not the RT version). It's a lot easier & quicker to navigate, the apps are cool to interact with etc.

My view.. unless you have touch, you'd rather save your money and stick with 7.

The laptop was bought nearly three years back with genuine Win 7.

as far as I ve seen.. Win 8 doesnt really give any Win7 user an advantage unless it is a touch based screen that the user would interact with ... and also the start menu is not that difficult to get after the tiles UI.. Support is not impressive.. waiting for it to pickup or else its definitely a wrong move as far as I go for any touch screen. MY soundcard Creative SB live Titanium XFi has no proper support and I end up getting a buzzing noise :( after installing other Win 7 drivers

P.S Another friend of mine with the same sound card has the same issue!!! Wish MS would take driver issues more seriously in future.. !! I really would like to use a touch screen on a modded PC some time later and the MEtro UI tiles are pretty convenient for my plans :)
