No..... a firmware update, even if available, will not enable the TV to play MKV as this requires hardware upgrade.
Buy a media player, that is the only way to play MKV.

Check the web fella. With a firmware upgrade, that one can play MKVs.

I own the LH70 (Scarlet 2) but just couldn't gather enough strength to take the risk so didn't try that.

Its very much possible.

Eh? You are sure? Please send me the link to download the upgrade, mick. Must try that upgrade even though my media player is already in the mail.

HAHA HA and run the risk of bricking the TV and voiding the warranty all at the same time? NO WAY!
@arif, don't even begin to think of trying it. I have never heard of people trying it on this forum and for good reason. Here is the WARNING from one of the sites suggested:

WARNING! Please read this first or you will brick your TV set!

NOTE: This is worth remembering. This firmware hack is only for the LH, LF & some LU Series EUROPEAN MODELS.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT try this at other models as YOU WILL BRICK YOUR TV! DON'T TRY THIS WITH USA/CA/ASIA MODELS
(LH7000 users avoid as this model doesn't work and already has USB working)

Along with this goes the assumption that I am not to be held responsible for the damage you might cause by following this guide.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
However if you follow/read the wiki thoroughly, you'll be fine.
WARNING: I'm sorry to have to write this again, but lately there have been reports of many people bricking their TV sets by not reading the whole wiki and the limitations to certain models.
PLEASE DON'T JUST skim through the wiki and say: Cool, I'll try this!
MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AND THAT YOUR TV MODEL IS SUPPORTED !

So take my word for it.... go for a media player. It's safer to assume that MKV playback is not possible on your TV! Unless someone here has already tried it, that is.........

How you know it is possible? Have you done it or know of anyone who has done it?
I don't trust these youtube videos unless I see them doing it in person. You do know that many people actually believed that Chris Angel really walked on water!!!

I understand that every firmware upgrade process has a component of risk, but in this case the risk is multiplied times ten. This so called firmware upgrade has not even been released by the company, so how to ascertain its authenticity? Even firmware upgrades released officially by a company is risky, for example, when WD earlier released a firmware for WDTV many consumers ended up spoiling their players. How much more risky would a non-official upgrade have to be?

Dude, if LG wanted their customers to watch HD on their TVs, they'd have done that. Clearly they don't so they've blocked the functionality.

If you want to get something that is not provided by the company, you either buy a better TV or go the third party way.

Rockbox firmwares are not released by apple or sandisk. Right ? But people who know their stuff do use that.

Anyway to each his own. I just wanted to tell you that its pretty much possible.

If it were as simple as LG wanting or not wanting their customers to watch HD, then a firmware update could have been provided and availed of through the service personnel. Many LG PK550 owners have actually got their firmware upgraded by service personnel.

I get your point about going the third party way. But I still refuse to believe that it is possible to enable MKV functionality on the present crop of Jazz TVs (LH60YR and 80FR/UR) unless I see one, or hear about it being done from creditable sources.

Anyway we have had our say, with no offence being taken, at least on my part. It is up to the OP to try and see if it actually works. Best of luck arif!!
