Hello ,
I am having issue with Shure M97XE Cartridge with my sonodyne turntable ... The Left channel noise is very low with big humming ... But other Shure Cart like M44-7 and M35-X working fine with same headshell ..
1. I have tried tried to swap L-channel and R-Channel in cartridge .
2. Changed the screw for mounting headshell
But issue is still there ... Any idea how to recover it .....

Thanks

Check the connecting leads to cartridge. The other option is check the DC resistance for both the channels on the cartridge. They should be same or close by.

Cheers.

Also check if the removable stylus is properly inserted into the cartridge body.

if all's fine with the wiring, its possible that your cartridge has an open circuit internally, hope that's not the case as if it is, you'll have to throw it away.

You mentioned you've switched carts on the same headshell, did you use the same connecting wires as well (for wiring the cart to the headshell)? It may be a break in one of those wires (if you've used different ones for the other carts)

Hmmmm... It looks like cartridge.

Btw anyone don,t measure resistance of cartridge coils with DMM. It will kill if already not.

There are few quality control issues in recent batches of M97xe.You can replace this cart under if it still in warranty.

Sachin

Hi Subinoy,

In the last few years, as far as I know Shure is making their cartridges in a plant in Mexico, and the reports on the quality control is not good.

I had to go through a very similar experience - one channel almost not present and producing hum. I bought it from the authorized Shure dealer in Chandni. I took the cart to them and described the problem. They immediately took it back, gave my money back and gave me the impression that they faced very similar problems before . They could get another new M97xE for me, but I had to wait for at least a couple of months. This one works and is mounted on my very old Dual CS5000 TT. It's unfortunate that after only 6/7hours of playing with the new cart, the motor of that TT died, and I am still looking to get the TT repaired. Fortunately I have another TT tolisten to.

Where did you buy the cart? If it's from the same people (the only authorized dealer of Shure in Kolkata, as far as I know), my suggestion would be to take the cart to them.

Regards.

Thanks For Reply ,
I have managed to carry it from USA ( I am in Kolkata Now ) . It was purchased via Amazon . don,t have any chance to replacement ...

And I have already done all type of swapping like changing 4 colored wire, changed the R & L channel, Used M44-7 and M35X in same headshell , changed Screw with insulated black screw . Checked the connecting Led to cartridge .... But nothing works .....
In Right channel its sounds very good . But issue is with Left channel .

Trying If I can check with someone others TT & Ampli ...
If any one used M97XE Cartridge with sonodyne TT . Then I can confirm whether the cartridge is faulty one ...

Thanks
Subinoy

I belive shure gives international warranty that is honoured. Have read about some experiences in this regard in india.

Hello Subinoy,

I have M97Xe cart which i am not using currently. You can take that cart to try with your TT.

Why is it so? The current flowing when using a DMM should be low enough? I am curious to know

Current through test resistance is depend on range you select, more for less resistance. Now inside cartridge you have one fixed magnet and other coil. Current through coil causes it's own magnetism which attarct or deflect coil and magnet. Thus could lead to damage to whole calibrated parts inside cartridge. MC cart are more prone to damage than MM cart. Also magnetised coil can not be fully demagnetised hence you loose some sensitivity there.

I am from Sri Lanka.

I have very very bad experience with M97.

I got down one from Singapore in 2008 and after few months there was no output from one channel. Found that it is open circuit.

Then as it was under guarantee period got a replacement.

The same thing happens after few months and the supplier at Singapore refused to offer a replacement.

Then I wrote to Shure and they did not wants to admit the fault.

I have old Shure M75 EJM Type 2 which is manufactured in USA and still working but there is a drop in one channel.

M97 is manufactured in Mexico.

If anyone need I can email the series of emails I dealt with Shure in this regard as a proof.

Thereafter I bought a Audio Tech AT120 and it is working beautifully since 2008.

One of my friend wanted to buy a Shure M97 Cartridge from local (Sri Lanka) market. When we checked all cartridges shows one channel open circuit. Those are brand new and not used.

For me there is a problem with Shure but they do not wants to admit and correct themselves.
